Babylon: City of Occult #1 of 2

November 29, 2010
The city: for good or bad, it’s with us, a place of need and of opportunity for those who run life’s race to please God. Cities are places of achievement and desolation, places where the whole spectrum of the human condition is on display. More and more people throng to cities, and, as ambassadors for Christ, so must we. Today: we tour the first of six major cities in the Bible.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Being thankful should not be limited to Thanksgiving Day. Believers are commanded to “give thanks in everything,” all the time. Some will say, “Do you mean I’m to be thankful for calamity?” Today, we’ll sharpen our focus on why it is that we can, and must, be thankful, and why and how we can rejoice no matter what our circumstances are.

The Pilgrims could not have imagined the spreads most Americans will sit down to on this Thanksgiving Day. What a feast! The Bible tells us “in everything give thanks.” Does this mean being thankful for illness or loss? Does it mean being grateful for having no job? Today: why the Bible’s command to be thankful does make sense even when to us, it doesn’t. Please stay with us.

When you hit bottom, you know there’s not much farther to go. Alcoholics and drug addicts know this all too well. The Bible’s famous prodigal son demanded his inheritance, and spent it all in a big hurry. Reduced to eating with the pigs, he realized he needed to come home and face the dad who’d begged him not to leave. Today: what it takes to get a prodigal to reverse direction.

During the teen years, kids figure they know much more than mom and dad. They long to break free from the prison they call home. Many a parent has a heavy heart, knowing that their son or daughter is far away from them, and from God. Today, a famous Bible story will give hope to all parents of prodigal children. Yesterday, we heard the sad account of Absalom. Today, we’ll hear a story with a happier ending.

“He who fathers a wise son will be glad in him.” Proverbs 23 has words David wished could have been true for him. As part of a classic dysfunctional family, Absalom rebelled against his father David. He went his own way, and ended up dead. The story is in the Bible for us to read, and then heed, its warnings. Today: crucial lessons for all parents of prodigal sons.

Many a parent has longed that a wayward son or daughter would come home. Some do, while others stay in “the far country….” Why is it that some kids want to break out and experience what the world has to offer? Invariably they end up in ruins, and wish they had never left. Today: we take a look at one prodigal son who left, and never returned. His name was Absalom.

We can still enjoy July 4 fireworks, but for many Christians, the liberties we celebrate are now being sharply curtailed. Under pressure from agenda-driven groups, what was once free speech is now a federal crime. In the public schools, tax money is used to indoctrinate our kids in the homosexual lifestyle. Is there a time to stand up and say “no?” Erwin Lutzer says “yes.”

For a long time, Christians could comfortably wave the American flag, since they saw their values represented in “Old Glory….” Now the government is repressing the freedoms Christians once had, favoring the agendas of those desiring same–sex marriage and unrestricted abortion. When the red, white and blue no longer blends with the cross of Christ, what do believers do?

Like snowflakes, no two people are alike. The differences bring great variety, but they can also plant seeds of conflict. Each of us is wired from birth to put self first. Only the spirit of God can smooth the rough edges and help us extend ourselves in blessing to others. Today, Erwin Lutzer tells the story of a cab driver with a horrid past, a man who needed a friend.

As someone once said, “The church is wonderful….I love the church…..it’s the people in the church that I can’t stand…” Well, we’re not in the Garden of Eden anymore. When disagreements and personal agendas rise to the surface, frictions can occur even between believers. Today, Erwin Lutzer exposes a not-so-secret secret: Christians don’t always get along.
