An Extraordinary Authority, Part 2 of 2

December 3, 2012
Some athletes loom larger than life. Their personas go beyond their sports prowess, and make them cultural icons. Genuine authority flows from within — no matter who you are. Jesus Christ had that kind of authority, an authority we still feel even today, two thousand years after He walked on Earth. How can He still command such devotion?

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. When you size up any group of people, it is easy to tell who is in charge — there is something intangible about real leaders. In all of history, no one has ever projected the authority that Jesus had. People were either drawn to Him or they wanted to kill Him. For anyone confronting the real Jesus, there was, and still is, no middle ground, and today we will see why.

People once thought that running a four-minute mile would take a miracle. Well, one day, someone accomplished this and it is no longer a miracle. Real miracles include such things as raising the dead, and feeding the five thousand, the kind of miracles Jesus did to prove He came from God. Today, more about the amazing life of Christ — a man whose claims were validated by His miracles.

He never wrote a book. He never owned a home. He never traveled extensively. Still today, He is the centerpiece of the human race. Jesus Christ lived a perfect life and died a perfect sacrifice. Not even His enemies could point to a single character flaw. He is worthy of our absolute obedience, since He is the only mediator between God and humanity.

There are many things that set Christ apart from all others who claim to point the way to God. His supernatural birth, for one. Jesus was fully human, but had no human father.  He was born to a young Jewish virgin. His beginnings on Earth were indeed extraordinary. So, how important is the virgin birth?

Everybody likes a story of rags-to-riches. But for Jesus, taking on human flesh means His story is one of riches to rags. The Son of God’s arrival in Bethlehem fulfilled countless prophecies and drew the attention of legions of angels. There is a reason why our calendars pivot from BC to AD at the time of His birth.

You cannot take home Olympic gold without following the rules of the race. Only one route leads to the finish line. And you cannot get to heaven by picking out your own religion as you might pick out a new coat. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No man comes to the Father except through me.” If this sounds intolerant to you, please listen to this sermon.

Tell an Olympic runner that “it doesn’t matter which track you race on, all are equally good,” and he will think you came from Mars. He knows a gold medal is only given to the winner at the track that counts. It is the same with God. There is only one way to reach Him, and that is through His son, the Lord Jesus Christ. If this sounds too exclusive for you, listen to this sermon.

When you try to swat a bee, he’ll most likely try to sting you. And when you hurt other people, they may just try to hurt you back. One thing kids learn real quick is how to get even. Taking revenge is a natural reaction when we are offended. But the Bible commands us to not seek revenge. We must rise above our instincts and allow God to be the one who makes things right.

It seems that conflict is inevitable. Even if we do no wrong, someone out there is all set to do some wrong to us. Resolving the resulting conflicts can be as painful as it is necessary. We must extend forgiveness even when every emotion in us tells us to “get even” instead. Today, more practical counsel on reconciliation and making things right with God and man.

Americans look forward to the holidays — times to gather with friends and relatives, times of shared happiness. But many among us dread times like these because it means facing people who have hurt us, or worse, people we have hurt. Unresolved conflicts are the collateral damage of sin — even forgiven sin. Today we will focus on putting damaged relationships back on track.
