An Extraordinary Authority #1 of 2

March 23, 2009
When you size up any group of people, it's easy to tell who's in charge. There's something intangible about real leaders. In all of history, no one has ever projected the authority that Jesus had. People were either drawn to Him, or, they wanted to kill Him. For anyone confronting the real Jesus, there was, and still is, no middle ground, and today we'll see why.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. People once thought that running a four-minute mile would take a miracle. Well, one day, someone did it...it's no longer a miracle. Real miracles include raising the dead, and feeding the five thousand...the kind of miracles Jesus did to prove He came from God. Today: more about the amazing life of Christ, a man whose claims were validated by His miracles.

He never wrote a book, never owned a home. He never traveled extensively. Still today, He is the centerpiece of the human race. Jesus Christ lived a perfect life and died a perfect sacrifice. Not even His enemies could point to a single character flaw. He is worthy of our absolute obedience, since He is the only mediator between God and humanity.

There are many things that set Christ apart from all others who claim to point the way to God. His super natural birth, for one. Jesus was fully human, but had no human father. Born to a young Jewish maiden who had never known a man, His beginnings on earth were indeed extraordinary. So, how important is the virgin birth?

Everybody likes a story of rags-to-riches. But for Jesus, taking on human flesh means His story is riches to rags. The Son of God's arrival in Bethlehem fulfilled countless prophecies and drew the attention of legions of angels. There is a reason why our calendars pivot from BC to AD at the time of His birth.

You can't take home Olympic gold without conforming to the rules of the race. Only one route leads to the finish line. And you can't get to heaven by picking out your own religion as you might pick out a new coat. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No man comes to the Father except through me." If this sounds intolerant to you, please stay with us.

Tell an Olympic runner that "it doesn't matter which track you race on, all are equally good," and he'll think you came from Mars. He knows a gold medal is only given to the winner at the track that counts. It's the same with God. There is only one way to reach Him, and that is through His son, the Lord Jesus Christ. If this sounds too exclusive for you, stay with us.

Jesus knew His disciples would be tested in ways they couldn't imagine after He faced the cross and ascended to the Father. That's why he spent His last night with them explaining what would happen and what they were to do. Today, we'll listen in us as some fearful disciples gain understanding from their Master. If you feel, like they did, that your future's out of control, stay with us.

When circumstances change in ways we can't control, we often feel helpless or even frightened, not knowing where to turn. The disciples felt that way when Jesus told them He was leaving to face the cross. How he encouraged them is how He will encourage us; it all has to do with finding out what's on "the last page."

When we speak a word of witness for Christ, we never know how people will react. But we can know that some are ready to believe. That's because the Holy Spirit works in the hearts of those the Father is drawing to Himself. Witnessing for Christ need not be a burden...in the power of the Spirit, it can be and should be a real adventure.
March 10, 2009
If the thought of witnessing for Christ frightens you, stay tuned. You're about to hear why you need never fear witnessing again. Just as a runner needs power to win a race, we need power to be effective witnesses for Christ. Today, from the words of Jesus Himself, we'll learn how to witness with absolute confidence as we learn about the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit.
