An Extraordinary Ascension, Part 2 of 2

December 11, 2012
Believers who run the race of the Christian life do not run alone. Christ ascended to bring many sons and daughters to glory. His ascension was “step one” in creating the church, the body of Christ, here on Earth to bear witness to Him until His return. Only a few saw Jesus rise into the sky, but everyone will see Him when He returns.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. He came as a babe in poverty. He left Earth in triumphant glory and His departure foretells the power of His return. We who run the race of the Christian life know that Jesus is sitting at God’s right hand and His ascension into heaven opened its gates for us. Why is the ascension important? Surprisingly, it was the key to founding the church — the body of Christ.

We all know the Olympic games began in ancient Greece. We know that they involved runners and races. But how do we know that? Because historical writings tell us so. The same is true of Jesus and His resurrection, there is historical written evidence that says He rose from the dead. Though naysayers may come and go, Christ’s resurrection is as certain as any event in history.

If there is one thing ancient Rome was good at, it was executions. They had a perfect record, no one they killed ever lived again, that is, until Jesus made the comeback of all time. When God raised Him from the dead, Christ was triumphant over death itself. And His resurrection guarantees that those who believe in Him, though long dead, will one day rise as well.

When winning Olympians take home their gold medals, they don’t hide them. They put them on display for the nation to see. The love of God was put on display when Jesus willingly went to the cross to die for our sins. His sacrifice was visible that day in Jerusalem, and, through the eye of faith, it is visible — even now — to those who trust Him for the salvation His death purchased.

For athletes, the greatest moments of life are defined by victories in the arena, on the playing field, or on the racetrack. But Christ’s defining moment was a cruel death on the cross. For those who believe, that death bought forgiveness of sins. And for that, we must be eternally grateful. Today we will begin to explore the horrific price paid for our salvation.

Some athletes loom larger than life. Their personas go beyond their sports prowess, and make them cultural icons. Genuine authority flows from within — no matter who you are. Jesus Christ had that kind of authority, an authority we still feel even today, two thousand years after He walked on Earth. How can He still command such devotion?

When you size up any group of people, it is easy to tell who is in charge — there is something intangible about real leaders. In all of history, no one has ever projected the authority that Jesus had. People were either drawn to Him or they wanted to kill Him. For anyone confronting the real Jesus, there was, and still is, no middle ground, and today we will see why.

People once thought that running a four-minute mile would take a miracle. Well, one day, someone accomplished this and it is no longer a miracle. Real miracles include such things as raising the dead, and feeding the five thousand, the kind of miracles Jesus did to prove He came from God. Today, more about the amazing life of Christ — a man whose claims were validated by His miracles.

He never wrote a book. He never owned a home. He never traveled extensively. Still today, He is the centerpiece of the human race. Jesus Christ lived a perfect life and died a perfect sacrifice. Not even His enemies could point to a single character flaw. He is worthy of our absolute obedience, since He is the only mediator between God and humanity.

There are many things that set Christ apart from all others who claim to point the way to God. His supernatural birth, for one. Jesus was fully human, but had no human father.  He was born to a young Jewish virgin. His beginnings on Earth were indeed extraordinary. So, how important is the virgin birth?
