We Are Called to Witness #2 of 2

August 19, 2011
In any community, there are leaders and followers. How we respond to those who can tell us what to do tells a lot about us. The Bible explains how slaves are expected to relate to their masters. In the culture of the first century, vast numbers of people were slaves. We can still draw valuable principles from today’s teaching in 1 Peter on how to respond to authority.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Philosophers sometimes probe the meaning of our existence. Ever wonder why you have been placed on Planet Earth? In a marvelous New Testament verse, our reason for being is clearly stated. It takes the form of a call by God, a call connected with our roles as members of a divine community known as the church. Today’s message gives clarity on why you and I are here, and what God expects us to do.

Some churches make a clear distinction between the priesthood and the laity, or between the leaders and the followers. In 1 Peter, all believers are said to be part of “a royal priesthood.” Today, we will consider our place in a local church. We will look at the role of the priesthood, past and present, and see that our status in the church may be higher than we think.

These days, a lot of people like to “do their own thing,” and some Christians take that approach when it comes to church attendance. All too many believers have withdrawn from a local fellowship, preferring to spend the Lord’s Day in other ways. The body of Christ can only help each member grow when each member follows God’s call to meet in groups on a regular basis.

When God said, “Be ye holy for I am holy,” He was commanding us to match his holiness. Having a right view of God automatically means we have a right view of sin, and, a desire to avoid it at all costs. As members of the body of Christ, we are called to lives marked by the joy of living in sync with God’s will and purpose, and that includes a separation from sin.

Some people think holiness is joylessness. In fact, the opposite is true:  we find joy in being set apart for God. It is easy to let the world press us into its mold, to conform us to what our culture expects. But God has a higher calling for His own: they are to enjoy the fruits of holy living. God clearly said, “Be ye holy for I am holy.”

Life on earth is an exam to determine the genuineness of our faith. The test score will be announced when Jesus returns. The Apostle Peter wrote of the believer’s living hope, a hope that becomes reality when Jesus appears, the One we love despite having never seen. The result is “joy unspeakable and full of glory.”

When you read the headlines, the future looks pretty dark. We are in the midst of financial upheaval, wars, terrorism, natural disasters. In spite of these trials, believers in the race of life know the goal line is not affected by this present darkness. Peter wrote that we are born again to a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

Even if you have gotten “a new lease on life,” that lease will one day expire. What kind of legacy will you leave behind? Paul could say, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”  Before his death, the Apostle Peter stirred up his readers toward fruitful growth in the faith. Today, we assess the impact of the life of Peter on those he knew, and, on all the generations to follow.

Great runners may feel invincible. While earthly victories come and go, there is a sense in which believers are invincible. Peter knew that his race of life would not end by execution in a jail cell. But when an angel opened the prison doors, the young church could not believe that Paul was miraculously free. Then again, would we have thought any differently?

As Christians mature, they eventually realize that there is Someone carefully orchestrating the symphony of their lives. As we run life’s race, we know that God goes before us to make sure the track is just the way He wants it. That is what happened for the Apostle Peter, and that is also what happens for you and me. Today we will track the story of a time when Peter went to prison.
