People make promises all the time and break them. New Year’s resolutions are prime examples. But when God makes a promise, you can trust that He’ll come through on it. God chose Abraham, telling him that all the earth would be blessed through his posterity—but Abraham would only ever see that promise fulfilled through the eyes of faith.

Before there was a Bible, before the Old Testament had even been written, God called a man out of Ur of the Chaldees and promised to make of him a great nation. Abraham found himself facing a lifelong journey of trust in God—a trust and a faith that God greatly honored.

Jesus knew His disciples would be tested in ways they couldn’t imagine after He faced the cross and ascended to the Father. That’s why He spent His last night with them explaining what would happen and what they were to do. Today, we’ll listen in as some fearful disciples gain understanding from their Master.

When sorrow comes into your life, turn to the end of your story. There you will see the risen Christ and “your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away.” Never underestimate God’s ability to turn sorrow into joy.

When we speak a word of witness for Christ, we never know how people will react.  But we can know that some are ready to believe because the Holy Spirit works in the hearts of those the Father is drawing to Himself. Witnessing for Christ shouldn’t be a burden…in the power of the Holy Spirit, it can be—and should be—a real adventure.

Jesus says, in John 16, that the Holy Spirit who comes to live in us, works through us to convict the world of sin . There is no possible substitute for a Christian being used by the Spirit of God to minister to people in order to bring about conviction that results in saving faith.

What Jesus loves, the world hates; what Jesus hates, the world loves. In John 15, Jesus tells His disciples that they would face the hatred and persecution that He faced—and so will all Christians who live Christ-like lives.

The better the world understands Christ, the more they will hate Him. Why? Because people are robbed of any and every excuse they’ve made about their sin; because the righteousness of Jesus exposes and judges their sin.

The badge of friendship is a sacrificial and generous love. “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
July 24, 2013
What is true love? In John 15, you’ll find it defined by God Himself. On the eve of His crucifixion, Jesus told His disciples, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Then He elevated the disciples from servants to the status of friends. The next day, He gave His life for them—and for us.
