When the sun rises each day, one thing that's certain is uncertainty: we do not know what a day may bring forth. Abraham came out of his tent one day and saw three men standing there...men who were not ordinary men. In his keen spiritual insight, he sensed he was in the presence of the Lord. As Hebrews 13 says, some "have entertained angels without knowing it."

The strife-torn Middle East has been a powder keg for millennia. Two groups claim ownership. Only one can be right. Genesis chapter 21 tells of the parting of the ways between the two sons of Abraham. Ishmael, father of the Arab nations, was cast out of the house along with his mother Hagar. When God changes your name, it's always the mark of a new relationship with Him, out of which comes a new destiny. For 99 years he was known as Abram. Now, he will be called Abraham, the "father of many nations." God institutes circumcision to mark the newly expanded covenant. Ishmael is a teenager...Isaac is not yet born. We stand at a crucial point in history.

"Too many cooks spoil the broth," the saying goes. And two women vying for attention can certainly wreck a household. Sarah's idea to have Abraham father a promised heir through her maid has backfired. Anger and bitterness have replaced the peace that once reigned in their home. Hagar runs away to escape the torment, only to find comfort from an unexpected place.

Sometimes, we second-guess God. Knowing what His will is, we may try to engineer circumstances to bring it to pass. That's what Abraham did when God said he would have numberless offspring. Most legal covenants between two parties require both to be faithful to the promises they have made to each other. But in Genesis 15, God makes an unconditional covenant with Abraham. God says He will do what He promises...no matter what. Now that's a secure promise. Today: why that covenant means that the work of Jesus is all that's needed for a believer to gain eternal life.

Way down deep, each of us wants to be part of something that is bigger than ourselves, something that has long-term value. In Genesis 15, God promises Abraham many offspring, more than the stars in the heavens, and pledges to give them much of the Middle East. Now that's something really big. Today: God's guarantee of a land and a people to bring forth the Redeemer.

Life's all about choices: deciding who to follow, and who to turn away from. Abraham and Lot both made their choices. Lot chose to ally with the King of Sodom, to his eventual ruin. Abraham paid homage to the King of Salem, Melchizedek, priest of God Most High. From that choice has flowed blessing to the entire world. What will your choice be?
