A Serving Church #2 of 2

November 5, 2009
Everybody likes a servant. We all enjoy being waited on. But not many of us like being the ones doing the waiting...

Servants have to serve even when those they serve don't appreciate it. They know that God watches their service, and is pleased. A church that serves is a church where God's presence is felt very strongly. That's a lesson we're taking home from our current study on revival.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. "Taking care of number one" is how most people set their priorities. It's unusual when people give others first place... That's what happens in a church experiencing the direct moving of God in their midst. A desire to serve others rises to the top, as it did in ancient Thessalonica. Paul commended this church for their service, and today, we'll learn the lessons they learned so long ago.

When all around us is turning to dust, we can still experience the joy of knowing that God remains on His throne... The church in Thessalonica underwent persecution, but nonetheless exhibited the joy of the Lord despite their trials. That's what happens when God's presence is very real, as it is during times of revival. Today: a further look at a church when God "shows up."

From time to time, God manifests Himself in a special way. New life comes to a church when revival begins... History records several great awakenings in Europe and America, and there's no doubt we could use another one now. What are the indications that God is making His presence known in an unusual way? Today, we begin a series from one of Paul's epistles that tells us what they are.

Adam and Eve had it good, real good, back in the Garden of Eden. But they tossed paradise aside when they disobeyed God. Many marriages begin happily, but then descend into conflict as husband and wife display the latent rebellion that's marked every human since that first couple. Today: how to apply God's solution to man's deepest problem, and heal broken relationships. Stay with us.

Endangered species: some environmental activists fret about the fate of the snail darter, or, perhaps the spotted owl. But the real endangered species is the family. Fractured, broken, stressed, dysfunctional...all these words describe a crisis in the most basic unit of society...a crisis that begins when marriages fail. Today: a candid look at the causes of these failures.

Anyone who thinks that marriage is the magic door to happiness might want to note that fully half of all marriages fail today. The resulting carnage of divorce and shattered families leaves a trail of dysfunction for generations. God intended marriage to develop character, not just fulfill sensual desire. Those who opt out of their marriages miss many rewards. Today: what those rewards are.

Walk down the aisle, say "I do," cut the cake, toss the bouquet. Marriage: it's the way to happiness...or, is it? There's good evidence in the Bible that marriage is designed more to develop character than to insure a lifetime of bliss. When the rough spots come, and they will, what are couples to take from those experiences? Today: a frank dose of married reality.

Many marriages are on shaky ground. Some see their mates like car models - trade them in when a better one comes along. The underlying issue is covetousness...wanting what you don't have. The Bible has clear directions for making marriages last, and today, we'll see why living a life of love, purity and honor is the only way to insure a long and satisfying marriage.

In the old days, it was said, "his word is as good as his bond." A handshake and a promise was all it took to seal the deal. These days, when a marriage breaks up, we have pre-nuptual agreements to divvy up the loot. Few take seriously the covenant they enter into when they tie the knot and exchange the rings. Today: back to basics, and why marriage, in God's eyes, is a lifetime deal, come what may.

Even among Christians, a marriage today has 50-50 odds of succeeding. Now, it's "split up" when the going gets tough. Wanda and Gustav Lutzer bucked the trend by celebrating 76 years of marriage in Canada. Their fifth child is Dr. Erwin Lutzer, who tells their story again on today's program, listing five principles that kept his parents together through thick and thin.
