A Loving Heart, Part 1 of 2 (When Jesus Has Your Heart)

July 23, 2013

What is true love? In John 15, you’ll find it defined by God Himself. On the eve of His crucifixion, Jesus told His disciples, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Then He elevated the disciples from servants to the status of friends. The next day, He gave His life for them—and for us.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. God does not save people to give them a fire-escape from hell. He saves them to bear fruit to glorify His name. The Father tends His garden carefully to maximize the harvest. So, how much fruit are you bearing?

The allegory of the vine and the branches in John 15 should remind us that we are dependent on God and that God will prune us so that we’ll bear much fruit. And though the stroke of His pruning knife may cause us pain and may seem to be a random slice, it isn’t. Every stroke of God’s knife is carefully calculated to help purify our hearts and minds.

“My peace I give you.” How could someone who knew they were about to be betrayed and crucified speak such words to His disciples—and to us? It’s because Jesus was totally, utterly surrendered to His Father. And in the midst of His last night on earth, He says that we, too, can have such peace. This supernatural, unearned gift is ours if we trust the Father, trust in Christ, and if we completely surrender to Him.

During His last night on Earth, when betrayal, denial, and crucifixion were looming over Him, Jesus said, “My peace I give you.” Though these words were spoken to His disciples, they were also meant for us.

Believers in Christ need never “go it alone” because within them they have the Holy Spirit of God. And this Spirit of God, through the Word of God, ministers the Truth of God and the companionship of Jesus in His physical absence.
July 16, 2013
The Holy Spirit is our helper, our companion, and our teacher. He is the continuation of the presence of Jesus in believers—all believers—simultaneously, all over the world. If Jesus had not ascended to heaven, He could not have sent His Spirit to us. He is with us at all times, illuminating the Word of God and changing us by the wisdom He gives us. And He will continue to do so forever.

With a believing heart we can do even greater works than Jesus did while He was here on Earth. In today’s message, Pastor Lutzer will explain what Jesus meant when He said, “Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do.”

Jesus isn’t just “one of the guys” —He is God. And a promise He made to His followers was that they would do greater works than He had. While on Earth, His ministry was geographically limited. But with a believing heart and with His Spirit, through the works of translators, and through transportation, radio, television, and the internet, His believers are reaching the world with His Word.

The reality of heaven is a sure antidote for the crushing weight of anxiety we sometimes feel on this Earth. Are you weighed down by fear? Remember the words of Jesus: a place is being prepared.
July 10, 2013
With a heart fixed on heaven, secured by trust in Christ, we can make it through anything thrown at us here on earth. We can turn off our anxiety if we stay focused on the Way, the Truth and the Life—on Jesus Himself.
