It's really great to talk with an intimate friend. You can feel safe, knowing that what's said stays between the two of you. Today: stay with us for thoughts from the Upper Room on being such a friend, and, on finding such a friend in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Someone once said that you can count the true friends you'll make throughout life on the fingers of just one hand. Perhaps you've made many friends along life's road, perhaps few or none. Jesus told us how true love is manifested: that a man lay down his life for his friends. Is this the kind of love manifested in your life, and in mine? If not, stay with us.

God does not save people to give them a fire-escape from hell. He saves them to bear fruit to glorify His name. For a believer, running life's race means bearing fruit by abiding in Jesus, the Vine. The resulting fruit is sweet to the Father, who tends His garden carefully to maximize the harvest. So, how much fruit are you bearing? How much am I bearing?

Everyone knows a branch of grapes receives its sustenance from the vine it's connected to. No vine: no food. Jesus wants us to know where the real power has to come from as we run the race of life. His disciples were people of the land, and they could easily understand a word picture of fruit. Today, let's all learn a lesson on fruit bearing from a vine and its branches.

Real peace within. It's great to have, especially when everything else in your life is anything but peaceful. When life's race gets tough, inner peace takes some of the bumps out of the road. Whether you have health issues, broken relationships, or even if you face an uncertain financial future, the peace Jesus offers is promised to all who believe in Him.

Jesus made many promises to His disciples in the Upper Room. One of them fills a need we all feel: the need for peace. Running the hectic race of life is a lot easier when we have peace within our souls. Peace is getting scarcer with increasing fears of economic collapse, and, as the world gets ever more hostile to Christ. But Jesus gives His peace to those who believe in Him.

Many Christians try to "go it alone," not realizing that within them lives the Holy Spirit, given to be our Helper. And we need help to run the race of life, and carry out the ministry God has for us. Our task requires power in the spiritual dimension, and that power comes from the Holy Spirit who was promised to all who believe in Jesus. As a Christian, you need never feel alone.

Before His death and resurrection, Jesus promised His disciples that He would send them a Helper after He was gone. Running the race of life takes strength. And the strength we need is more than natural energy. Jesus knew we would need supernatural strength, and promised to send the Holy Spirit to provide spiritual energy for every child of God even today.

At His time of greatest need, Jesus showed us how to pray...how to pray in a way that brings glory to God. In the Upper Room Discourse, Jesus seems to indicate that whatever we request, we can have. What are the conditions on answered prayer? Is it all tied to how fully we believe? Today, a look at what Jesus meant when He said, "Whatever you ask in my name, that will I do."

Does your belief in Christ cause you to make any difference in the lives of those around you? According to Jesus, it should. In His famous Upper Room Discourse, He said that those who would believe in Him would do greater works than He did. At first glance, that appears impossible. What works could be greater than His? Today: an explanation of this astounding statement.

A runner knows the track he's on is real. The goal line is real. And the gold medal he wants to win: well, that's real too. Believers in Christ can be certain of another reality: the very real heaven Jesus told us about. That reality is a sure antidote for the crushing weight of anxiety we sometimes feel on this earth. Are you weighed down by fear? Remember the words of Jesus: a place is being prepared.
