Running To Win

Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer

A Growing Faith #1 of 2

June 30, 2009
When God changes your name, it's always the mark of a new relationship with Him, out of which comes a new destiny. For 99 years he was known as Abram. Now, he will be called Abraham, the "father of many nations." God institutes circumcision to mark the newly expanded covenant. Ishmael is a teenager...Isaac is not yet born. We stand at a crucial point in history.

"Too many cooks spoil the broth," the saying goes. And two women vying for attention can certainly wreck a household. Sarah's idea to have Abraham father a promised heir through her maid has backfired. Anger and bitterness have replaced the peace that once reigned in their home. Hagar runs away to escape the torment, only to find comfort from an unexpected place.

Sometimes, we second-guess God. Knowing what His will is, we may try to engineer circumstances to bring it to pass. That's what Abraham did when God said he would have numberless offspring. Since his wife was past childbearing, he slept with their Egyptian maid Hagar. The result: the present Arab-Israeli conflict. Today: what to do when faith doesn't seem to square with reality.

Most legal covenants between two parties require both to be faithful to the promises they have made to each other. But in Genesis 15, God makes an unconditional covenant with Abraham. God says He will do what He promises...no matter what. Now that's a secure promise. Today: why that covenant means that the work of Jesus is all that's needed for a believer to gain eternal life.

Way down deep, each of us wants to be part of something that is bigger than ourselves, something that has long-term value. In Genesis 15, God promises Abraham many offspring, more than the stars in the heavens, and pledges to give them much of the Middle East. Now that's something really big. Today: God's guarantee of a land and a people to bring forth the Redeemer.

Life's all about choices: deciding who to follow, and who to turn away from. Abraham and Lot both made their choices. Lot chose to ally with the King of Sodom, to his eventual ruin. Abraham paid homage to the King of Salem, Melchizedek, priest of God Most High. From that choice has flowed blessing to the entire world. What will your choice be?

The journey of Abraham to Canaan led to a series of events crucial to the eventual establishing of the nation of Israel. The book of Genesis tells of beginnings: of creation, of the Fall, and of God's intent to provide a Redeemer through a nation of His choosing. Abraham's faith was tested over and over, and today, we'll see Abraham victorious in battle, and generous when facing another man of God.

Our culture says "look out for number one." Most of us assume that number one is "me." But wise believers know better. Abraham lets his nephew Lot pick the land he wants and agrees to take what's left over. Like candy before a baby, the offer is too good for Lot, who quickly chooses the best even though it would lead to ruin. Today: learning that God gives His best to those who leave the choice with Him.

An old TV commercial advised us to "grab all the gusto you can..." Pick the best for yourself, because you really do deserve it. Well, after backsliding in Egypt, Abraham is back in fellowship with God, and his renewed faith is clearly seen during a dispute with his nephew Lot. Today: why we don't have to grab all the gusto, since God has our lives in His hands. Stay with us.

When your life's on the line, most people would say lying is fine. After all, what good are you dead? That was Abraham's dilemma. To save his skin, he tells Egypt's Pharoah that his wife is his sister. Abraham's journey of faith hits an early snag as he tries to out-maneuver the Egyptians rather than trust God. The result? He got kicked out of Egypt. What lessons can we learn?

Life's not a bed of roses, the journey has rough spots. How believers pass through those spots tests their trust in God. Abraham was chosen by God to leave the comforts of Ur of the Chaldees and journey to a land he'd never seen. His nice house became a tent, as he came face to face with challenges he'd never expected. Today: Abraham's faith is tested for the first time.
