A Father's Long Shadow #1 of 2

October 4, 2010
There is one man whose imprint on our lives can never be erased. Even from the grave we feel the impact of our fathers. We all know that fathers are normally the family breadwinners. But in the Bible, fathers are also responsible for the spiritual well-being of their wives and children. Today we will explore the power of a dad’s example for good or ill.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Go to a supermarket and check out the magazine counter. There you will see what the world thinks makes the perfect woman. They have perfect hair, perfect complexions, and probably, several imperfect husbands in a row. Well, let’s forget our cultures view and focus on the Bible’s “perfect woman” chapter. Here we will see what really matters when God evaluates each woman and mother.

While our culture urges women to break through the glass ceiling, only women can bear children, and thus preserve our future. That’s why motherhood is so key to a nation’s survival. The Bible exalts the place of mothers, and gives women principles by which they can fulfill their deepest longings. Today we look at motherhood as a vital component of rebuilding fractured families.

Adam and Eve had it good back in the Garden of Eden. But they tossed paradise aside when they disobeyed God. Many marriages begin happily, but quickly descend into conflict as husband and wife display the latent rebellion that has marked every human since Adam and Eve. Today we look at how we can apply God’s solution to man’s deepest problem, and heal broken relationships.

Some activists get very concerned about the fate of the snail darter or perhaps the spotted owl. But the real endangered species is the family, fractured, broken, stressed and dysfunctional. All these words describe a crisis in the most basic unit of society. If the church does not act to save the family, who will?

There is no government program, no insurance policy and no medical procedure that can keep anyone from dying. For most of us, life seems too relentless to spend much time thinking about death. But coming to grips with our own mortality is a sobering thing we all need to do. Today we look at more about facing the end the way Jesus did.

There is already set in the plan of God a time and place for you and me to die. We must trust Him with this appointment. Even if we know where we are going, death can be a fearful prospect. Today we will learn how to leave the timing of this awesome appointment in the hands of God, and then rely on Him to see us safely through the gate.

To most people, hell is just a swear word. After all, who really believes in demons, pitchforks, and hot licking flames? Modern misconceptions of hell have made it a myth to most people. But hell is very real and very certain for those who die without Christ. Once this life is over, unbelievers will face the real terrors of death.

The very word brings to mind hopelessness and torment. Hell is a place of judgment that few take seriously. But that is a mistake. Hell is just as certain as heaven, and God makes it clear that He has made a way for you to escape the one and enjoy the other. Today we see a stark picture of a terrible destiny, a destiny you need not face.

Hollywood filmmakers help us imagine some pretty awesome places. But no video image could prepare you for the New Jerusalem. A 1500-mile cube will be the eternal home for the redeemed, a place Jesus called “My Father’s house.” If you trust Christ, it can be your house, too. No mortgage payments, just a wondrous city with a dwelling crafted especially for you.
September 21, 2010
Imagine the most wonderful place in the entire universe. Then triple its wonder. It would still pale in comparison to heaven. One day a city will descend to the regions of earth, a New Jerusalem, resplendent with the glory of God. Today we take a first look at our heavenly metropolis: the gigantic future eternal home for the redeemed.
