A Dream Is Fulfilled #2 of 2

July 1, 2011
Behind every move in Joseph’s life we see God’s hand. Whether in a prison, or in a palace, God was working out a plan, and God has a plan for you and for me, a dream He wants to see brought to pass. If your life seems haphazard, take hope. Today we will learn more about the providence of God as He works His will through the fabric of our choices, and those of our enemy the devil.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. It was a long road from a pit in Canaan to a palace in Egypt. For Joseph, God’s dream had been fulfilled. The fate of men and nations depended on one man holding on to a dream God had given him. That dream was one component in the providence of God: God directing all events toward His intended purpose. Today we will learn about the mysterious providence of God.

The story of Joseph in Egypt is one of high drama: a former slave judges the brothers who sold him years before. In the tapestry of God, a plan was unfolding to save two nations, a plan of such ingenuity that only God could have crafted it. In the process, a man’s character was being refined, and that is perhaps the real purpose of God in testing the dreams He gives.

When the dreams we cherish most come from God rather than from within, we can be sure that those dreams will come to pass. Joseph’s dream was almost destroyed by frightful circumstances. But God saw to it that his dream’s fulfillment had international consequences. There was a far bigger purpose at work than Joseph even realized. And the same may be true for you.

The Apostle Paul learned how to be abased, and how to abound. In the Old Testament, Joseph learned the same thing, rather quickly. One minute he’s in jail. The next, he’s vice-regent of Egypt. But he kept it all in perspective: he knew that God was working out a plan, a plan placed into his heart in a dream. So, how’s your dream coming?

Some people falter at the least obstacle placed in their way. Others see the long-range goal, and face their problems with courage, but few of us have ever faced the trials Joseph faced. Between this man and his dream lay injustice, treachery, slavery, and prison. Indeed, his dream was sorely tested. How long could you hang on to your dream under circumstances like these?

Is the dream you have for your life farther away than ever? Are you just plodding along with no hope of reaching your goal? Take heart. Although Joseph in the Old Testament had a dream of ruling his brothers, he ended up sold into slavery. A lesser man might have decided that his dream would never come to pass. But for Joseph, the dream never died.

For the Christian, life is more than laps around a track. On the way to the goal, we have dreams of what God would have us do. So, do you have a dream? Maybe it seems unreachable. We’re going to meet a man from the pages of the Old Testament whose dream had to die before it could come to pass.

“The word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword.” That’s especially true for the words of Jesus, Who knows our thoughts and motives. Today we'll hear His words on our motivations, as recorded in Matthew 6. Our job: letting in the light to scatter the darkness in our lives. Many of us dwell in darkness, instead of seeking to live life’s race ablaze with light.

Good deeds can be seen. Motivations can’t. Why we do what we do is a key focus of Christ’s teaching in Matthew 6. Here we experience radical surgery as our motives are dissected. Do we do what we do for the praise of men? The Great Physician wants to get our service for Him back on track. Today: we go to the clinic to get Christ’s diagnosis.

To stop eating for a time has some known health benefits. But in the Christian life, it also has great spiritual benefits. Fasting: it’s not often talked about in a culture where what we usually want is fast food. Today, let’s explore further the “why” and “how” of fasting, as Jesus taught in the gospel of Matthew in chapter six.
