Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer

A Discerning Heart #1 of 2

February 13, 2009
We've all heard the expression: "So near and yet so far." Judas was close to Christ, but not close enough. Today, pause in your race of life to ponder the mystery of a man whose heart was so black that he could look Jesus in the eye and still betray Him to His enemies. Is it possible that you or I could be so near, and yet be so far? Ponder this, and then, stay with us.

As mature as we may be as Christians, none of us can get through a single day without the need to confess our sins. That's why Jesus washed His disciples' dusty feet: to show us that we need daily cleansing, without which we have no part with Christ. Today: we'll cover some practical issues on keeping short accounts with God. Stay with us for more teaching from the Upper Room.

When Jesus washed His disciples' feet, He was really teaching a lesson on why He had to wash His disciples' hearts. We pick up a lot of dust in the race of life: dust that clogs the pores of our souls. The road is dirty, and we need to come to Christ for cleansing every day. Today, from the Upper Room, we'll begin to learn what that process is all about, and why, for a believer, it's not optional.

Jesus turned the world on its head when He stooped to wash His disciples' feet. Superiors don't serve inferiors, do they? In the kingdom of God, they do. Let's face what lies ahead by learning about the character of Christ, and then, by going out and doing what He would do: and that is to practice servant leadership.

It's a paradox: everyone likes a servant, but few want to be servants, to be like Jesus, washing others' feet. As 2009 unfolds, let's chart a new course: the course of becoming like the Christ Who saved us, and then, making a difference in our individual spheres of influence. Today: grab a towel for lesson number one in developing the heart of Jesus.

Job learned a great lesson in his unspeakable time of suffering. And to be able to face the unknowns of life, so must we. Victorious runners in life's race know that they are clay in the Potter's hands. And the Potter can do whatever He wishes with His clay. Can you accept this bottom-line reality? What's more, can you embrace it? Today: the end of a life-changing series.

Hidden in the councils of heaven are the answers to the heartfelt cries of millions of people...people who simply want to know "why?" As we run the race of life, we encounter troubles we can't explain...and circumstances we can't possibly deserve. We seek a reason for our pain, and perhaps only the life to come will reveal the answers we crave. Remember though: beyond our pain is God Himself.

When He speaks, all other voices are silenced. All creation pauses to listen. When God speaks, the skies thunder. We can know that our running of life's race has a purpose, even when we suffer along the way. Job learned this from the Voice in the whirlwind. If you're going through unspeakable pain, listen with us to that Voice, and hear what God is saying.

When we face severe trials, we ask "Why?" We may never know the answer. But for a suffering Job, the answer was dramatic...a voice from out of a whirlwind. We who run life's race serve a God Whose purposes are often hidden from us. We're called to trust His heart even when we can't understand His actions. Today, we'll learn that God transcends our limited viewpoint of His will.

In many ways, God is hidden to us. We cannot fathom His purposes. Still, we persevere in faith, knowing He's active. Runners in life's race must learn that God is too big for anyone to comprehend. A man named Job was sorely tested by God, and then found some wisdom by discussing his plight with a young man named Elihu. Consider this: is God big enough to superintend your suffering?

Tough questions must be faced. Questions like "where was God in the Holocaust?" And, "Why is our economy unraveling?" Runners in life's race need to know that these kinds of questions can be faced, and have been faced, yet, there are mysteries we cannot fathom and may never fathom. Every generation needs to learn some key lessons anew, and today, it's our turn.
