Running To Win

Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer

A Costly Faith #2 of 2

June 19, 2009
Our culture says "look out for number one." Most of us assume that number one is "me." But wise believers know better. Abraham lets his nephew Lot pick the land he wants and agrees to take what's left over. Like candy before a baby, the offer is too good for Lot, who quickly chooses the best even though it would lead to ruin. Today: learning that God gives His best to those who leave the choice with Him.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. An old TV commercial advised us to "grab all the gusto you can..." Pick the best for yourself, because you really do deserve it. Well, after backsliding in Egypt, Abraham is back in fellowship with God, and his renewed faith is clearly seen during a dispute with his nephew Lot. Today: why we don't have to grab all the gusto, since God has our lives in His hands. Stay with us.

When your life's on the line, most people would say lying is fine. After all, what good are you dead? That was Abraham's dilemma. To save his skin, he tells Egypt's Pharoah that his wife is his sister. Abraham's journey of faith hits an early snag as he tries to out-maneuver the Egyptians rather than trust God. The result? He got kicked out of Egypt. What lessons can we learn?

Life's not a bed of roses, the journey has rough spots. How believers pass through those spots tests their trust in God. Abraham was chosen by God to leave the comforts of Ur of the Chaldees and journey to a land he'd never seen. His nice house became a tent, as he came face to face with challenges he'd never expected. Today: Abraham's faith is tested for the first time.

People make promises all the time and break them. New Year's resolutions are prime examples of broken promises. But when God makes a unilateral promise, you can take it to the bank. God chose Abraham, telling him that all the earth would be blessed through his posterity. And yet Abraham would only ever see that promise fulfilled through the eyes of faith.

"The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." In the case of Abraham, that journey began as a walk of faith. Before there was a Bible, before even an Old Testament, God called a man out of Ur of the Chaldees and promised to make of him a great nation. Seeing that promise fulfilled required great faith. Abraham found himself facing a lifelong journey of trust in God.

"You do your thing, and I'll do mine." That's today's mantra of tolerance. But in terms of salvation, only one thing matters. Faith in Christ is the non-negotiable factor that transforms people from darkness to light, and changes their destinies from hell to heaven. Nothing is more important to understand, and today you'll hear a crystal-clear explanation.

People with no hope beyond this life live only for this life. Their motto: "eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die." Believers in Christ look forward to a certain home in heaven. And this outlook turns their inward look to an upward look....a look full of promise and hope. This hope is something we can share with all who ask us why we have that hope. Do you have that hope?

A baseball legend once pointed to center field, showing where the next pitch was going. The crowd roared as the ball left the park. Babe Ruth knew where that ball was going. And Christians can know where they're going after death. That's because our assurance of salvation is built on three pillars in the scriptures, none of which is in any danger of being toppled. To learn more, listen with us.

When a group of runners hits the track, not one of them can be certain that he will finish the race first, or, even finish at all. But in the race of the Christian life, it is possible to be certain that you will finish at last in heaven. And knowing your destiny makes all the trials of this life bearable. The assurance of salvation: that's our focus on today's broadcast.

The thrill of winning a marathon race is deep and fulfilling. Holding the victory cup makes all the effort and training worthwhile. But a greater joy awaits those who, through the new birth, begin their own race on the track of the Christian life. And past the finish line of this life lies an eternal future with Christ Himself. Today: why the new birth is a miracle only God can perform.
