In the Biblical times, the people would set up stones as a tool for remembrance of God’s help for them. We are told of a story about the Israelites who wasted 20 years because they did not repent and follow the Lord. It was not until they repented, made a sacrifice, and obeyed Him that they were able to receive His help in defeating their enemies. Sacrifice is always necessary in repentance, but the longer we wait to repent the more we experience the consequences of our choices. God’s deliverance always comes when we call on Him, and it is important that we remember His help just as the Israelites did when they set up a stone and named it Ebenezer, meaning “God has helped us thus far.”
