Stumped

January 21, 2011

A reality of life is that sometimes things happen that stump us.  It could be the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or just anything that leaves us asking God, “What are you doing?”  Even people like John the Baptist and the disciples found themselves stumped sometimes.  The best reaction to when we are stumped by something is to seek God for answers because He can take our questions.  In this world there will be many moments where we find ourselves stumped, but when we enter eternity with Christ, He will make all things known to us, and so until then we take heart and keep pressing forward.

Paul wrote in his letter to the Philippians for them to imitate him because he modeled what it meant to follow Christ.  He never said he was perfect, but he knew that he was at least a few steps ahead of them.  In the same way, we are to find someone to follow who would be willing to be a mentor, a leader, while at the same time we are to lead someone else.  That is where maturity comes in, by following someone who is more mature.  Discipleship happens when we lead someone else, showing them what it looks like to follow Christ.  That is when a legacy of life is left is when you lead someone in such a way to equip them to lead others

Often we complain when there are consequences for our actions, however if we weren’t God’s children and He didn’t love us, there would be no consequences.  In early Scriptures, the consequences for someone’s sin meant that something, unblemished and without spot, had to die.  Because of Christ’s death on the cross as payment for our sin, we are spoiled rotten to the point that all we have to do is truly repent and be clean.  There will be consequences, just as a shepherd breaks the legs of his sheep before returning it to the flock, however we should be grateful because our consequences are given to us out of love, and we must genuinely learn from them.

About Richard Ellis

Authentic... Genuine... Sincere... This guy is the real deal. He loves God. He loves his wife Rebecca and his 3 daughters. He loves people. He loves his job. He loves Texas BBQ. He loves an occasional round of golf. And he loves the Dallas Cowboys (but don’t hold that against him!).

Richard grew up as a missionary kid in Brazil, coming back to the states to finish his education. He graduated from Baylor University in 1982 with a BA in Oral Communications, and earned his MDIV in 1985 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, making him the sixth generation of pastors in his family. His early days of ministry included serving for three years as the Single Adults Pastor at the First Baptist Church of Dallas.

Then in 1997, Richard Ellis founded Reunion Church, a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, non-denominational church in the heart of Dallas,Texas. Dallas needed a church like it. And it would need a pastor like Richard. So Reunion Church was born. And now the radio show and the website (www.RichardEllisTalks.com) join the Reunion Church community under the leadership of this guy. And we’re all the better for it!
