A motley crew is a group that could be made up of a whole bunch of mismatched, very different people.  Each member brings their own unique attributes tot the crew, and each is an essential part.  This is a perfect picture of those who make up the Kingdom of God, but too many of us like to stick with our own “kind” as if we are too good for anyone different than us.  Rather than judging other people by their appearance, background, social status, financial state, or any other thing, we should look at them as God looks at them – worthy to die for.  That is what Jesus did for each and every one of us, and those who make up His motley crew, no matter how screwed up any individual is, all end up in the end wearing white and living in eternity with Him.

Just as onions are made up of many layers, each individual person has layers themselves.  More often than not, the more layers that get peeled back the harder it is to accept and love that person just as they are.  In the Church, it is essential that we put aside our differences and look past all the “onion rings” of each person and love them because God loves them.  Since we are brothers and sisters in Christ, we will be with each other for all eternity so we might as well let go of our issues with one another early on so that we can live in peace amongst each other.  We all have the commonality of serving the God who is Lord of all, even all of our “onion rings.”

The devil and his demons are consistently working to destroy us.  As the devil prayed to Jesus that he might sift Peter like wheat, so he prays that he may do the same for all of us.  The only way that we can stand firm against the devil is to pray like Hell for ourselves and for others.  When we stand in the gap through prayer between God and someone or something that the devil is attacking, we put up a fight so that eventually, given that we continue to hold on, the devil is overcome by the power of God residing within us.  We must always remember that God empowers us to fight in this spiritual battle when we pray fervently because sometimes it’s prayer that can make all the difference.

About Richard Ellis

Authentic... Genuine... Sincere... This guy is the real deal. He loves God. He loves his wife Rebecca and his 3 daughters. He loves people. He loves his job. He loves Texas BBQ. He loves an occasional round of golf. And he loves the Dallas Cowboys (but don’t hold that against him!).

Richard grew up as a missionary kid in Brazil, coming back to the states to finish his education. He graduated from Baylor University in 1982 with a BA in Oral Communications, and earned his MDIV in 1985 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, making him the sixth generation of pastors in his family. His early days of ministry included serving for three years as the Single Adults Pastor at the First Baptist Church of Dallas.

Then in 1997, Richard Ellis founded Reunion Church, a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, non-denominational church in the heart of Dallas,Texas. Dallas needed a church like it. And it would need a pastor like Richard. So Reunion Church was born. And now the radio show and the website (www.RichardEllisTalks.com) join the Reunion Church community under the leadership of this guy. And we’re all the better for it!
