Hard of Hearing

July 31, 2011

In the Christian culture it is far too easy to become calloused and hard to the Biblical truths that are drilled into us from childhood.  When we feel like we already have things figured out, we become subconsciously closed off to what God may be trying to tell us.  Instead of reading our Bibles merely to mark it off the daily checklist, we should always read it for the purpose of hearing what God wants to tell us through each passage and to then respond by doing what He tells us to do.  By approaching the necessary reading of Scripture in this way, we maintain a soft heart and open ears to be able to hear God when He speaks to us.

When Christ left this earth to ascend into Heaven, He left us with the command to make disciples.  Following Christ and being a fisher of men go hand in hand.  Unfortunately we are living in an “orphan age” where people think they can just go to church, give their money, and never be part of the family.  Spiritual growth comes from being discipled and then discipling.  We can see how this worked when the apostles started churches, they continued to teach and disciple their spiritual “children” so that those “children” could grow up and raise their own spiritual “children” and so on.  Being a follower of Christ means that you are part of the family and can no longer live as a detached orphan attending an orphanage.  You must get involved and pursue Christ’s call to make disciples.

This is the message of the Gospel that was prophesied in the Bible for Jesus to take on our payment of death because of sin.  He did not deserve to die, yet He accepted the brutal death on the cross in order so that we may be saved.  All we have to do at this point is believe and have faith, yet we too often feel as though we must also do something to earn salvation.  The bottom line is that the Law, all the rules that you could follow, comes with a curse of death because if you break one you break them all, and it is impossible to follow them all.  Christ’s death changed everything and it is only by faith in Him that we can be saved from the fate of deserving death up a tree.

Jesus said that we should not consume ourselves with laying up treasures here on earth because they will inevitably be destroyed in one way or another.  Instead, we should focus on investing in treasures in heaven that will last for eternity.  The only way to invest in something eternal is to invest in other people.  You do not get your reward when you die, you get your reward in the end because if you have been investing in others than you will continue to reap the rewards of those you’ve invested in investing in others and so on.  Making disciples is the most important thing that we could do while here on earth.

About Richard Ellis

Authentic... Genuine... Sincere... This guy is the real deal. He loves God. He loves his wife Rebecca and his 3 daughters. He loves people. He loves his job. He loves Texas BBQ. He loves an occasional round of golf. And he loves the Dallas Cowboys (but don’t hold that against him!).

Richard grew up as a missionary kid in Brazil, coming back to the states to finish his education. He graduated from Baylor University in 1982 with a BA in Oral Communications, and earned his MDIV in 1985 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, making him the sixth generation of pastors in his family. His early days of ministry included serving for three years as the Single Adults Pastor at the First Baptist Church of Dallas.

Then in 1997, Richard Ellis founded Reunion Church, a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, non-denominational church in the heart of Dallas,Texas. Dallas needed a church like it. And it would need a pastor like Richard. So Reunion Church was born. And now the radio show and the website (www.RichardEllisTalks.com) join the Reunion Church community under the leadership of this guy. And we’re all the better for it!
