God Helps Those Who Help Themselves

October 20, 2015

We sometimes face difficult situations where if God doesn’t come through for us then we won’t make it. We are incapable of helping ourselves, but God’s grace and mercy comes in, as long as we wait on Him, and He will show us what to do.

It’s easy to allow our mistakes to take us out and keep us from trying again to serve God. Instead of beating ourselves up, we need to accept His forgiveness, move forward, and trust Him to give us the support we need to keep trying what He’s called us to do until we succeed.

The Bible tells us that our life is like a vapor, meaning that according to God’s time we are on earth for mere minutes. It is important that we realize that time is slipping away so that we can utilize what we have left by following His will and plan for our lives.

When we have a relationship with God, it goes with us in our daily lives, and we are called to act on that relationship in ways that help others. Any religions acts that someone does apart from Christ are a waste of time.

The kind of real relationships with people who will sharpen us is hard to find and we cannot find those relationships until we have a relationship with God. In the same way, we won’t be able to truly love others as we love ourselves until we’ve experience the love that God has for us.

Parents are given the command to teach their children the ways of the Lord so that they may walk in those ways early on in their lives. We all come to a point where we tire from walking in a spiritual relationship with God, but when we come to those points we must go back to the reasons we first fell in love with God so that we can continue moving forward with Him.

While our purpose on earth is to glorify God, we find that not even our best religious actions can glorify Him. It is when we turn to God and repent that He comes in and accomplishes genuine change in our hearts, then uses us to change the world around us for His glory.

The Bible tells us to not only know what we need to do but to step out in obedience and do it. There are many things that God may be telling us to do, and we need to jump, knowing that He will catch us and provide for all that we need.

Just as Christ’s passion was not only displayed on the cross but also in His suffering leading up to the cross, we are also to endure the inevitable suffering in life with passion for Christ. We are also to be passionate about others and serve them in the same way Christ served others.

There are various reasons that we may need a time out from the difficulties of life and ministry, but God never gives us permission to quit altogether. God has a purpose and plan for our lives and while we are still living on earth we need to stay active in fulfilling that plan, making a difference in others and sharing the Gospel until He calls us Home.

The Bible expresses the importance of gathering together as the family of God to encourage each other, help those who are hurting, and keep each other accountable. One of the best contributions you can make to the Christian community is simply to show up consistently and be an active part.

About Richard Ellis

Authentic... Genuine... Sincere... This guy is the real deal. He loves God. He loves his wife Rebecca and his 3 daughters. He loves people. He loves his job. He loves Texas BBQ. He loves an occasional round of golf. And he loves the Dallas Cowboys (but don’t hold that against him!).

Richard grew up as a missionary kid in Brazil, coming back to the states to finish his education. He graduated from Baylor University in 1982 with a BA in Oral Communications, and earned his MDIV in 1985 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, making him the sixth generation of pastors in his family. His early days of ministry included serving for three years as the Single Adults Pastor at the First Baptist Church of Dallas.

Then in 1997, Richard Ellis founded Reunion Church, a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, non-denominational church in the heart of Dallas,Texas. Dallas needed a church like it. And it would need a pastor like Richard. So Reunion Church was born. And now the radio show and the website (www.RichardEllisTalks.com) join the Reunion Church community under the leadership of this guy. And we’re all the better for it!
