Fat Tuesday

March 4, 2014
The idea of Fat Tuesday is to party hard and get sin out of your system before seeking forgiveness on Ash Wednesday and moving into Lent. The Christian life does not work this way because all sin has consequence. Although God forgives us, we must strive to live a life that is obedient to Him at all times, making nothing else an idol.

The devil will try to remind you of your past sins in order to cripple you from moving forward, but you must cling to the forgiveness that God has already given you. Overcome the devil’s accusations by claiming God’s forgiveness that came through the Blood of the Lamb.

Too often we become discontent with our circumstances, whether it be something continual like the place we work or difficult situations that come up every now and then. No matter where we are at any given time, we need to ask God to show us how He wants to use us in the place that He has put us.

There are people all over the planet who suffer for being a Christian. Some lose their jobs while others lose their life. Jesus suffered and died for us and when we suffer for Him we get a taste of what the Kingdom is about.

It is crucial in the Christian life to find a church, commit to it as God leads, and stick with it even if it gets hard or you may get offended. God created us to not live alone, and in order to live in the way He created us to it means that we must have whole-hearted devotion to a church family, building relationships and fellowshipping together.

When Jesus walked the earth He healed many people and taught His disciples to do the same. God wants to use you to do His work, so without knowing His purposes it is important to obey Him in whatever He calls you to do. When you respond to Him with trust and obedience in small stuff He will use you for bigger things.

It is easy to compare ourselves to others, whether by outward appearance or difficult circumstances, and we tend to question God. Just as the pot cannot question the potter, we must trust God that He has a plan and purpose for how our life is and instead of comparing we can willingly allow Him to use us however He pleases.

Instead of judging other people for the lifestyle choices that they make, we need to examine ourselves and realize that we need Jesus just as much as they do. When we allow Him to come in and change us from the inside, it will show through our actions. Don’t try to make people change their actions for your own comfort, help them see that they need Jesus.

Every Christian is called to share the Gospel with everyone around them. The greatest way that you can show that the Gospel has made a difference in your life is by living differently than everyone else, being the salt and light. Wherever God has placed you, make sure you are doing your job as a Christian on the job.

God is described in the Bible as implementing truth at the same time as mercy over and over again. Without mercy, truth becomes too difficult to grasp, and without truth, mercy allows for too much freedom. In the same way that God pairs both, we must do the same when dealing with others.

When someone accepts Jesus as their Lord and Savior, He restores that “maker’s mark” lost from the fall of creation within that person and they are redeemed, never to be condemned again. We must believe in the promise that because of Christ we are made new – restored to bear the image of God because that is how He created us to be.

About Richard Ellis

Authentic... Genuine... Sincere... This guy is the real deal. He loves God. He loves his wife Rebecca and his 3 daughters. He loves people. He loves his job. He loves Texas BBQ. He loves an occasional round of golf. And he loves the Dallas Cowboys (but don’t hold that against him!).

Richard grew up as a missionary kid in Brazil, coming back to the states to finish his education. He graduated from Baylor University in 1982 with a BA in Oral Communications, and earned his MDIV in 1985 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, making him the sixth generation of pastors in his family. His early days of ministry included serving for three years as the Single Adults Pastor at the First Baptist Church of Dallas.

Then in 1997, Richard Ellis founded Reunion Church, a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, non-denominational church in the heart of Dallas,Texas. Dallas needed a church like it. And it would need a pastor like Richard. So Reunion Church was born. And now the radio show and the website (www.RichardEllisTalks.com) join the Reunion Church community under the leadership of this guy. And we’re all the better for it!
