Extra Ordinary

August 11, 2015

Throughout Scripture we see how God takes ordinary people and uses them to accomplish His work. God still wants to use ordinary people like us and all we have to do is be available to Him.

Allowing unfair circumstances to get the best of us, or trying to change things and do things our own way, does not get us anywhere but rather worse off. God’s got a plan and we can see that through the various stories in Scripture when He used trials to abundantly bless His children in the end.

Without God, we are just a pile of dry and dead bones. When we simply receive the gift of salvation that He offers out of grace, we are brought to life and have the opportunity to share this with a lost world.

The Bible tells us that God intricately made us just the way we are from the moment we became life in the womb. He has plans for us and can fulfill those plans no matter what mistakes we’ve made. When God calls us to take a stand for something we need to submit ourselves to Him in obedience.

We are all susceptible to messing up, no matter how obvious the right way seems to be. Jesus said that it is not only in knowing the Scripture that our foundation is grounded on, but it is in applying what we know to our lives and following through in obedience.

It’s easy to find all the reasons why God shouldn’t use us, or even reasons why we don’t want Him to use us, but all of those are just excuses. Our purpose is to do the work of God and we must believe that He can overcome any of our inadequacies to accomplish what He wants to do in us and through us.

God has determined the length of each of our lives, but we do not know when our time is up. Rather than wasting the time He gives us by running our own lives, we need to submit to Him and let Him use us however He pleases.

Jesus taught us that we must deny ourselves, take up our crosses and follow Him. In order to obey that command, we have to first humble ourselves and lay prostrate before the Father, submitting ourselves to His will no matter what suffering it may hold.

We believe in a God who came down in person and lived among us here on earth before dying for our sins. We ought to follow the Lord’s prompting and show up in person wherever He leads us whether at work, a neighbor’s, a friend’s, or even a different country.

As followers of Christ, we are not only human but rather we have the power of God Almighty in us to resist temptations. God gives us everything we need to overcome sin, we just need to keep our eyes focused on Him so that we can utilize His power to live a godly life.

God had a purpose for the lives of Jacob and Esau, and nothing they could do would change His plan. They made a mess of things, just like we do in our own lives, but Jesus came later on down the line and cleaned it all up.

About Richard Ellis

Authentic... Genuine... Sincere... This guy is the real deal. He loves God. He loves his wife Rebecca and his 3 daughters. He loves people. He loves his job. He loves Texas BBQ. He loves an occasional round of golf. And he loves the Dallas Cowboys (but don’t hold that against him!).

Richard grew up as a missionary kid in Brazil, coming back to the states to finish his education. He graduated from Baylor University in 1982 with a BA in Oral Communications, and earned his MDIV in 1985 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, making him the sixth generation of pastors in his family. His early days of ministry included serving for three years as the Single Adults Pastor at the First Baptist Church of Dallas.

Then in 1997, Richard Ellis founded Reunion Church, a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, non-denominational church in the heart of Dallas,Texas. Dallas needed a church like it. And it would need a pastor like Richard. So Reunion Church was born. And now the radio show and the website (www.RichardEllisTalks.com) join the Reunion Church community under the leadership of this guy. And we’re all the better for it!
