November 29, 2013
In the first couple of verses of the second chapter, John expounds on his earlier statements assuring believers that if we do sin, we have an Advocate with the Father: Jesus Himself. He then goes on to say that He is the “propitiation” for our sins. And that is good news!

Daze Of Deception
Jesus warned that deception would grow worse as we draw nearer to the end times, saying, “Take heed that no one deceives you” (Matthew 24:4). Distinguishing truth from error has become increasingly challenging—even in the church. We live in a time when falsehoods assault us from every direction. Packaged with just enough truth to make them appear trustworthy, these counterfeits have grown more and more difficult to detect and avoid. Living in the Daze of Deception explores the many ways error is masquerading as truth—and you’ll learn how you can discern the difference.

In the last three verses of the first chapter, the apostle John sets the record straight on sin in the life of the believer. And the text indicates that he covers both sinning and the condition of being a sinner. John also reminds us that if we confess our sins, God is faithful to forgive us and to cleanse us because of His Son’s shed blood.

In this portion of his epistle, the apostle John makes known that he and the others were eyewitnesses-essentially using similar language found in his Gospel: that Jesus is “the light.” And we believers are to walk in that light, and will therefore have fellowship with our Redeemer.

Of all the New Testament authors, John, who had a profound comprehension of both the love and divinity of the Messiah, seems to be the one who pours his heart out the most to his readers; you can sense his passion as he writes-especially when he expresses first-hand eye-witness encounters with Jesus.
