You've Been Chosen Forever (Children of an Awesome God)

November 2, 2014

As a believer matures in the faith, he or she comes to realize that salvation is not so much a result of our seeking God as it is the result of God choosing us.  We will learn that if God had not done this, none of us would ever have chosen Him.

Only the Christian can be certain that all of life is heading toward a future glory. That is why a believer can know that all things, even the bad things, work together for good for those who love God.

It is tough to be optimistic when trudging through life’s tough times. Some people try to grin and bear it; others crack under the pressure. But the Christian can have a perspective that makes enduring troubles possible, a perspective of a future glory that makes our present suffering infinitesimal in comparison.

How would you feel if you got a letter saying that an unknown benefactor had died, leaving you great wealth? You were an heir to a fortune and didn’t even know it. Well, that is exactly what you are as a child of God. In the book of Romans, we read: “The Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs….joint heirs with Christ.”

As the economy plummets, we may not find much encouragement in our surroundings.  Many of us are fearful for the future. But for the Christian, this is a good reminder that our real security and treasure lies in the world to come. In the book of Romans, we find that this teaching can transform our outlook as it changes our lives.

Jesus was not content to limit his preaching to the synagogues of His day. While on his way to meet with a man whose daughter had died, a woman in the crowd reached out to touch His garment, thinking that she would be healed of a twelve-year disease. In this brief encounter in Mark 5, we get a glimpse into the heart of Jesus. His heart was indeed a heart of compassion.

Early in the ministry of Jesus, He became known as a healer. Large crowds followed him wherever He went, hoping to be cured of their many ailments. His heart was moved as He saw them as sheep without a shepherd, harassed and helpless. How do we as believers view the great needs around us? Do we share the heart of our Savior?

When life is going smoothly, it is not hard to have faith in God. Yet when calamity strikes, maintaining that faith is a different matter. Many of the heroes of faith in Hebrews 11 went through fiery trials, some losing their lives because of their commitment to God.  We must learn what it means to develop a faith that persists even when all outward evidence suggests God does not care for us.

On the surface, things can look pretty grim with the world heading toward chaos and the economy on the edge. But there is another way to view what is going on around us, and that’s by using the eye of faith and seeing a greater purpose than our natural eyes can see. The book of Hebrews gives us role models to follow, people who had great faith despite their circumstances.

Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are the two most meaningful observances in the life of the church. Christ commanded that we practice them as outward symbols of His inner working in our lives.
