When the Answer is Disaster(The Triumph of Unanswered Prayers)

Sometimes we are overwhelmed with calamity. When we pray, it seems that God is nowhere to be found. We lose a job, get a foreclosure notice, or our health is suddenly at great risk. And despite earnest praying, our situation only gets worse. That was the cry of the prophet Habakkuk, and the cry of many others.

“Ask, and you shall receive, that your joy may be full.” This promise of Jesus might lead us to believe that answers to our prayers ought to be the answers we are asking for. But sometimes, God sends answers that have less to do with what we ask, and more to do with the relationship with Him that He wants us to have.

We are all used to having instant coffee, instant internet, and, in general, instant gratification of our desires. When it comes to prayer though, “instant” is not usually part of the equation. Often, years pass before we see an answer to an oft-repeated request before God. How do we come to grips with the need to wait, and wait, and then wait some more?
