Is the United States under God’s judgment? As we look at the rise of secularism, apostasy, and moral corruption, we shouldn’t be surprised if God has said, “Enough is enough,” and is taking us, as a nation, to a place we’ve never been before.
In this message, Pastor Lutzer compares the judgments—moral, economic, and religious—in the book of Jeremiah to what is happening in the U.S. today. He reminds us that we were born in this day and age to prove God’s faithfulness in the midst of a nation that is under judgment.

The place is very, very old. Olive trees date back over a thousand years. Situated on the slopes of the Mount of Olives, it overlooks the ancient city of Jerusalem. You can visit this place today, and it looks much the same now as when Jesus was there thousands of years ago. The place is Gethsemane.

If the Lord brought a revival of repentance to a city, most people would rejoice. But not Jonah. He felt double-crossed. God withheld the judgment Jonah had prophesied against Nineveh. Today: God teaches a lesson to a man who still rebelled even after surviving a fish’s belly.

Some believers will only obey God after He teaches them a lesson the hard way. Jonah finallywent to Nineveh, a little the worse for wear after three days inside a fish. There’s an old saying, “there are no atheists in foxholes.” Another place without atheists is in the belly of a great fish—as the prophet Jonah can attest to. Jonah found himself in a really tight place, and here he prayed like he’d never prayed before.

Mules are known as stubborn creatures, but none of God’s creations is as stubborn as mankind. Amazingly, even redeemed men and women try to resist His will for their lives. Today, we’ll meet a prophet of God who was more stubborn than any mule.

There are few things that can burden the soul like suffering from an illness that never seems to improve. You cry out to God, and when the healing doesn’t come, a sense of deep disappointment sets in. It’s at this point that many Christians resolve to never pray again, asking, “what’s the use?” Behind the disappointment, God does have a plan.

We all rejoice when God answers a prayer in an unmistakable way. But what do you do when God’s answer is “no”? We can look to the Apostle Paul who begged the Lord three times to remove his thorn in the flesh but God’s reply was “no.” Paul learned that God’s power is made perfect in our weakness.

Sometimes we are overwhelmed with calamity. When we pray, it seems that God is nowhere to be found. We lose a job, get a foreclosure notice, or our health is suddenly at great risk. And despite earnest praying, our situation only gets worse. That was the cry of the prophet Habakkuk, and the cry of many others.
