The Seductive Power of Desire (Guard Your Heart)

January 12, 2014
Imagine yourself in a boat that is safe and dry. Across the pond another boat is leaking and sinking. You may think you’re okay. But in terms of moral temptation, we are all in the same boat.  All of us are prone to moral sin, and the media makes such sinning easy.

It has been said that America will fall, not by the guns of its enemies, but by the moral rot of its citizens. One reason for this is media. The more “online” we become, the more exposed we are to addictive moral perversity. The danger is very real, and the evidence is everywhere.

It’s been said that there are no atheists in foxholes. Being in mortal danger focuses the mind. Brave men and women in the line of fire know that only by the grace of God will they survive. Sometimes Christians pray without a sense of great need.  In the New Testament, we’re taught to combine prayer and fasting when the subject of our prayers is serious. As the New Year beckons, we’re on the precipice of great need, both in our churches and in our country.

When a new member of the British royal family is born, the TV channels cover it wall to wall. Even we Americans were glued to our sets to catch that first glimpse of the future king of England. When the King of kings was born, no cable news crews were waiting with bated breath. But there were those who would never be the same after angels lit up the Bethlehem sky.

Long ago, being a king meant you had total authority over your people. When Israel was under Roman domination, they longed for a king to free them from tyranny, a king with the power to make things happen. It was into that world that Jesus was born, the One we know as the King of kings.

When reading the Bible, some people skip over the long genealogies they find, lists of names they can’t pronounce and don’t really understand. Some of these lists are in the Old Testament, and trace the generations of Israel’s leadership. But the most crucial list like this in the Bible tells about the line that brought us Jesus, and this genealogy makes it clear that the King of kings has a legal right to the throne of Israel, as prophesied in the Old Testament.

December marks the season when we commemorate the birth of Jesus so long ago. The tiny infant who lay in that manger will one day return to earth as King of kings. His first coming was prophesied in great detail, and took place exactly as foretold. Once we understand these prophecies, we’ll be better prepared to expect His second coming.

While we are on earth, the clouds obscure the sky. We cannot see the life to come as clearly as we see what is around us. But the Bible does give some tantalizing views of what is ahead for a child of God.  Today we will peer across the great divide into the ultimate destiny for all who trust Christ.

The hymn-writer penned these words: “…clothed in His righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne.”  The Bible tells us that, as believers in Christ, we are given new spiritual clothing. Today we will look at an Old Testament preview of this wonderful truth.

In the Bible, the Greek word for “angel” means “messenger.”  An angel brought a message to Mary, as they brought God’s messages to many throughout the Bible. Normally we cannot see angels, but they are there, doing the bidding of God by ministering to the people of God.

Christians live in two worlds:  the visible one of everyday life, and the invisible world of the spirit. The two are often in conflict, and our journey through life is not always easy.  Making it through that journey requires the motivation to endure it, and today, we will discover where believers are to find that motivation.
