The New Testament, Part 2

There is one book in the Bible that guarantees a blessing to all who read it. It is the very last book, the Book of Revelation. Written in apocalyptic language rich in symbolism, Revelation portrays the future yet to be, including the glorious return of Jesus, the resurrection of the dead, the judgments, the Millennial reign, and then, the eternity which follows.

In the drama of redemption, the Old Testament is a grand prologue. In the New Testament, the great transaction takes place. A sacrifice for the sins of all mankind is offered on a cross outside the city of Jerusalem. Jesus gives his life not far from where Abraham almost offered his son Isaac. No playwright could dream of a story so bold, so loving, and so wonderful.

Many TV viewers are fascinated by what they see on The History Channel. Here they can get a big-picture view of past events, events like those that shaped the nation of Israel. The Old Testament is many things: prophecy, history, law, and wisdom literature such as Psalms and Proverbs. Today we will continue our jet-plane flyover of the Old Testament, and we will focus on the time when Israel was taken into captivity and its temple was destroyed.

Imagine the earth as a grand stage. Here, a great drama is being played out. But this drama is real. Long ago, mankind sinned, separating us from our Creator. God was not content letting His finest creation die without hope, so He set in motion a plan to redeem those that believe in the value of a great sacrifice: this sacrifice is that of Jesus on the cross.

In ancient times, the job of shepherd was about as low on the rungs of society as one could go. It was a dirty task, left for those who didn’t mind long hours and not much pay. Sheep were raised for temple sacrifice just a few miles south of Jerusalem. It was to men tending these sheep that angels announced the greatest event to ever take place on Planet Earth.

A small town lies six miles south of Jerusalem. It is the little town of Bethlehem. There, Jesus was born to Mary and placed in a cattle feeding trough. Gently rolling hills surround Bethlehem, and over those fields on a night long ago a myriad of angels appeared to announce the Savior’s birth.

You can visit the place where Jesus was born in the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. It is one of the oldest churches in the world. A silver star marks the traditional spot where Mary gave birth, and a nearby place marks the location of the cattle feeding trough where the infant Jesus was laid. Of course, there was no church 2,000 years ago, only a rude cave used for housing animals. Indeed, the King of Kings was not born into luxury.

In Hebrew, Bethlehem means Beit Lechem, or “house of bread.” It was in Bethlehem that Jesus came into this world, the one who later said, “I am the bread of life.” What really happened on that awesome night? This message will begin a series that answers that crucial question.

We are not called to give thanks for all things; rather, we are commanded to give thanks in all things, recognizing God’s provision in every area of life. Alcoholism, gambling, drugs, pornography are all addictions which can tear a family apart. Few marriages can survive when one or both spouses have compulsive behavior of any kind. Today we will learn how to find the way to freedom from addiction, a freedom that solves one of the toughest puzzles facing marriage today.
