Given the mandate of taking the gospel to the Gentile world, the Apostle Paul went boldly into what is now modern Turkey and Greece. His early attempts to evangelize got him in hot water. In a city called Philippi, he and his partner Silas ended up being whipped and tossed into a high security cell in the local lockup. But as the light began to penetrate that pagan culture, a great miracle underscored the Gospel’s power.

The one certainty everyone faces is the end of life. As someone has said, “we’re all born with an expiration date.” Whether rich or poor, king or peasant, none of us can avoid dealing with what happens after that certain date. In First Corinthians chapter fifteen, the Apostle Paul wrote about the resurrection of Jesus, and why it’s our great hope, since those who believe in Him will also be raised from the dead and given new bodies for all eternity.

How deep is your love for Jesus? Does it just carry you to church on Sunday? Or does it go deeper? Today, we’ll celebrate Palm Sunday by learning about a woman who sensed that Jesus would soon be gone, and gave all she had to prove her love for the Savior: the Savior who would soon give His life as a ransom for many.

It seems the world is reeling from crisis to crisis: Middle Eastern turmoil, rising prices, declining supplies and nation after nation facing a debt that cannot be satisfied. All over the earth, civil unrest is just beneath the surface. Meanwhile, politicians make promises they can never keep. All of this creates a climate of fear. As foreclosures dot every block, and jobs grow scarcer, Americans feel that fear more everyday. How should a Christian face the uncertain days ahead? Today, a ringing call to rely on God, no matter what comes our way.

Someone has said that God has no physical hands but uses our open hands with which to care for a suffering world. As we find strength in the community of the church, we need to extend the hand of outreach to those whose greatest need is to know the Savior. Today: steps we need to take before the church goes to work.

The pain people endure when facing grief or loss is compounded when they have to face it alone. The church of Jesus Christ provides a place where pain can be shared, and burdens can be lifted. No one need feel isolated in their torment when the body of Christ stands ready to help.

How far would you go to prove your willingness to obey God? Abraham went as far as it may be possible to go when commanded to sacrifice his son Isaac, the son of promise, the son through whom the Messiah was to come. In a picture that foreshadowed the sacrifice of Jesus, this great test of faith marked the high point in the life of this great patriarch.

Abraham’s nephew Lot had a habit of making bad choices. Living in Sodom was one of them. But when Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed by God, Lot was shown extraordinary mercy and his life was spared.

About Pastor Philip Miller

Philip Miller is the 17th Senior Pastor of The Moody Church. Philip holds a B.A in Pre-Seminary Bible from Cedarville University (’04) and a Th.M. in Pastoral Leadership and New Testament Studies from Dallas Theological Seminary (’10). His wife, Krista, also holds an Th.M. degree from DTS. They have four children: Claire, Violet, Cora, and Jude.

Philip is a visionary leader with over twelve years of ministry experience, including three at Christ Community Church in the western Chicago suburbs and nearly seven as Senior Pastor at Westwood Baptist in Olympia, WA. He believes people flourish as followers of Jesus when they live deeply in the gospel, experience the healing of true community, and join Jesus on mission in their world. He is committed to cultivating a gospel-centered church that welcomes spiritual explorers, promotes gospel clarity in culturally engaging ways, inspires passionate worship, fosters deep spiritual vitality, empowers people to holistic discipleship, and catalyzes a multiplication movement of gospel renewal both locally and globally.
