The Father We Worship

September 16, 2007
At the core of what a Christian must believe is that there is a God, and that He created all that is. The Bible tells us that God is our heavenly Father, a Father who desires His children to walk in truth and obedience to all He has commanded. Today, Dr. Lutzer is continuing a series on the central teachings all believers must understand, and we invite you to stay with us.

The Christian life is a life of faith...and that faith begins by believing what the Bible teaches. Knowing the central doctrines of the faith helps us discern error and grow into maturity as followers of Christ. That is why we are beginning a series on those crucial, central teachings.

In a recent poll, seventy percent of college students admitted that they cheat. The upcoming generation says they want to see integrity in politicians and national leaders, but they do not place a high value on their personal integrity. D.L. Moody said that "character is what a man is in the dark." Today, we will learn to discern integrity...in others, and in ourselves.

Movies, social drinking and dancing…in the past, Christians avoided all these drawing a sharp line in the sand on what was appropriate behavior for a believer. Those days seem all but gone, which raises the question: what is a valid standard for Christian conduct? And how much should our culture impact what that standard allows? Today, we will seek discernment in the difficult area of what we should and should not do.

In days past the occult was obvious, and Christians stayed away. Nowadays paganism is central to the culture, and we encounter it at every turn. The media is a conduit of false spirituality pointing people away from worshipping our transcendent God and helping them worship gods made in their own image. Our task: to discern the true from the false.

If you watch enough TV you will be convinced that success depends on a youthful physique, flowing clean hair, and perfect teeth. We have come to idolize good looks, and to relegate character to a distant second place. Trouble is, we are not all beautiful people, so what do we do?

Television and movies have come to define the American way of life. Sadly, they also define the lives of many Christians. Our minds are filled with seductive images, and our hearts grow cold to the things of God. If there is any area in which we need real discernment, it is here - deciding what to watch, and when.

All too often thousands will gather, hoping that a faith healer or a weeping painting can remedy their ailments or deformities. A few seem to find healing; but most go home the way they came. Many wonder: are miracles for today? Can we claim God's power like turning on a light switch? Today: the real story about miracles - genuine and counterfeit.

The Bible warns us that false teachers would arise in the last days. Whether we are in those last days or not, there are false teachers and false teachings everywhere, broadcast on radio and TV and proclaimed from our pulpits. Now, more that ever, we have got to face the issue of discerning truth from error. Today: you will learn about a framework for judging what you hear.

Christian belief is by no means monolithic. There are hundreds of denominations, creeds, and statements of faith to choose from. How do we know what is true, what is only half-true, and what is false? Some say, "Forget doctrine…just love one another." Clearly, we need guidance to help us sort out what to believe.

Whenever we seek to exercise discernment of the beliefs and actions of others, people are quick to quote the words of Jesus that we should not judge, lest we be judged. Obviously, to not judge at all means that anything goes. Today, you will hear a message that clarifies what Jesus meant when he spoke in Matthew chapter 7.
