The media has convinced many Americans that unless they buy more things, they'll never be happy. But unseen by the media are the thousands of Christians who know that this life is but a shadow of a life to come, and that spreading the gospel is far more important than padding the retirement account. How is it that a shoe salesman with a grade-school education could eventually preach to enormous crowds on two continents? The only explanation: God chose to use a simple man to reach vast multitudes with the gospel. One day, D. L. Moody heard these words: "The world has yet to see what God can do with a man wholly consecrated to Him." He then vowed to be that man. Today: how God honored that vow.

Over a century ago, those who sought opportunity in America looked to the west. Among them was a young man named Dwight Lyman Moody, who in his youth had no idea what God was going to do through him. Another Independence Day marks America's birthday. While some hail increased government activism, others fear that our democratic underpinnings are crumbling away into a new era of tyranny. They see hard-won freedoms melting away, as a war is being lost without a shot being fired. Many are now asking: "Is God on America's Side?"

As America's Independence Day approaches, some wonder if the land of the free and the home of the brave is losing its grip on its foundations. Increasingly, our population is politically polarized, moral standards have hit new lows, and economic uncertainty is everywhere. The question could well be asked: "Is God on America's Side?"

Baptism and the Lord's Supper are the two most meaningful observances in the life of the church. Christ commanded that we practice them as outward symbols of His inner working in our lives.

Perhaps there is no more poignant picture of Christ as when He took the basin and the towel to wash His disciples' feet. He wanted them to know that the way to greatness was through the pathway of service.

Life in the body of Christ brings with it a wonderful element of fellowship, both with God and with other believers. And the basis for that fellowship is spoken of by the Apostle John as "walking in the light."

It was Jesus who proclaimed, "I will build My church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it." The church is God's primary means of working in the world, and each Christian should have a vital relationship with a local body of believers.
