The Battle for Your Heart (Guard Your Heart)

January 1, 2017

It’s been said that America will fall, not by the guns of its enemies, but by the moral rot of its citizens. The media is one reason why. The more “online” we become, the more exposed we are to forces determined to addict us to moral perversity. The danger is very real and the evidence is everywhere. Here is a call to engage people who use the internet and other media to enslave us.

In a dark world, believers in Jesus have within them the light of God. Their challenge and obligation is to illuminate the darkness around them so that others may come to that light which has transformed their lives.

When you’re lost in the dark, what you need is a source of light. It was Jesus who proclaimed, “I am the light of the world.” At Christmas, we remember that Light and rejoice in the salvation He makes possible for all who believe and receive Him.

When light comes, the darkness scatters. We may think darkness covers our sins, but in the light of God, nothing can be hidden. When Jesus came, light blazed into a darkened culture, and truth began to triumph over lies. That’s why many hate the Christ of Christmas. Getting close to Him exposes our darkness, and some people would rather keep their darkness. Let’s come clean before God and allow Him to reign supreme.

Christmas is far more than gift giving, far more than the story of a baby born in a manger. It’s really a celebration of God’s intervention in human history. To a world lost in darkness, the Bible tells us that a great light was seen, a light personified by the Lord Jesus Christ. He bought our redemption, only possible because Jesus came to this earth to live and then die as a sacrifice for our sins.

Jesus was not content to limit his preaching to the synagogues of His day.  While on his way to meet with a man whose daughter had died, a woman in the crowd reached out to touch His garment, thinking that she would be healed of a twelve-year disease.  And in this brief encounter in Mark chapter five, we get a glimpse into the heart of Jesus - a heart of compassion.

Early in the ministry of Jesus, He became known as a healer. Large crowds followed him wherever He went, hoping to be cured of their many ailments. His heart was moved, as He saw them as sheep without a shepherd, harassed and helpless. How do we as believers view the great needs around us? Do we share the heart of our Savior? Let’s look into the motivation of Jesus when He saw human need, and examine our own hearts in the process.

There comes a time in the decline of a nation that God no longer delays judgment. America may be at that point. And believers are caught up with everyone else when economic and social calamity strikes. How should we as believers act and live when the going gets tough? Let’s take some guidance from an Old Testament prophet who saw times like ours coming.

According to an article in Newsweek magazine, Christians are being murdered for their faith from one end of the Muslim world to the other, and yet the mainstream media remains quiet. Like it was in ancient Rome, there’s a war on to destroy the faith of believers in Christ, and this war is coming to our own shores. Let’s ask ourselves, “What it would take for us to deny our faith?”

Many people watch the stock market like hawks. We all need money, but one day the money we crave will be no more. One day, all things that gives us false security will vanish, and that’s the day of final judgment. Then, what we are on the inside will be all that matters.

Sometimes we go directly from great blessing to times of great trial. That’s what happened to Jesus. He was led by God into the wilderness and found Himself tempted to sin by the devil.  Hungry and thirsty, He was very vulnerable, but fought off Satan by using the Word of God.  Let’s learn lessons from forty days in the life of Jesus.
