Pastor Philip Miller

Rescued from Hopelessness (Rescued: What God Did to Save Us)

August 4, 2013

Jesus came to deliver us from hopelessness. Believers have been given many blessings that are wrapped up in Christ. Among these blessings is hope—a hope that the darkness will someday come to an end because Jesus has already triumphed over the darkness.

But hope begins when you’ve made peace with God and until you’ve dealt with that issue, until you’ve humbled yourself and trusted Christ as your Savior, your hope will be futile.

Faith can destroy you. All the faith in the world can’t change lethal poison into medicine. Having faith in the wrong “Jesus” can lead you to your own destruction. So it’s important that your faith is a true faith, a faith based on the true Jesus—a faith based on specific promises; a faith that understands both law and grace; and a faith that’s growing. A little bit of faith in the true Jesus is better than absolute confidence in a false Jesus.

The slightest smidgeon of sin will banish you from the presence of God forever. Martin Luther understood this and spent hours each day confessing his sins. But he ran into a quandary: Sins, in order to be forgiven, had to be remembered. If sins aren’t remembered, they can’t be confessed. If sins aren’t confessed, they can’t be forgiven. And what if there are things that God considers sinful but you aren’t aware that they are sins? Luther eventually connected the dots, and in this message, Pastor Lutzer takes us through the passages in the book of Romans that led Martin Luther to saving faith in Jesus Christ—and the start of the Reformation.

God is the final reality in the universe. And one day we will either face His wrath or His mercy. Leading us through six of the most important and powerful verses in all of history, Pastor Lutzer gets to the innermost meaning of the cross. All of us have sinned and God’s wrath against sin is enormous and should never be underestimated. But God’s love is just as enormous and so He provided a sacrifice—His own Son—to pay for our sins. There is no other religion in the world where God becomes the sole redeemer of man. Our salvation is through faith alone, because of Christ alone, by God’s grace alone.

We all are born with the potential for great good. But we’re also born with the potential for unimaginable evil because we were all born with sin. As we read the last part of Romans 3, Paul gives us a stinging indictment of human nature—a life filled with doing good for others, being completely selfless—even those good works are tainted with sin and unsuitable for entrance into heaven. But God has a plan, completely independent from anything we can do, that will save us and take away the stain of our sinful natures.

There are three rationalizations that many religious people make that are wrong and that can be disastrous:  •    Because we are blessed, we’re approved by God •    If we’re unfaithful it nullifies God’s promises and calls into question His integrity •    And lastly, the grace of God nullifies the judgment of God Walking us through sections of Romans 2 and 3, Pastor Lutzer expounds on Paul’s response to each of these statements so that we might not live a hypocritical life.

Religion can enable us to have a false sense of who we are. As a result of the Fall, we’re unable to see our own faults clearly—something that we all need to rectify. In this message from Romans 2, Pastor Lutzer gives us six assumptions “religious” people tend to make and why they’re wrong. Until we are able to see our own hearts with a great deal of clarity, we can’t truly understand God’s grace. And if you think this is for everyone else, not yourself, then you’re already deceived.

Jesus came to save us from the wrath of God. In today’s society, we’ve lost sight of God’s anger and hatred of sin, and we spend a great deal of energy trying to manage our sin. We want to justify the way we live even though we know, deep down, that it’s wrong. We’ll do anything to rationalize our immorality. As the Apostle Paul says, we take the unnatural and turn it into “natural.” In today’s message, we’ll look at the darkness of the human heart.

The Gospel is not just information—it’s intervention. Only God can change the human heart. Only God can change our motivations and desires. Only God can save us from our sinful selves. In this first message on the book of Romans, Pastor Lutzer explains why this book is one of the most important books in the New Testament and how Romans has had a huge impact on Christianity.

In today’s world, Christians are pressured to accept all kinds of things that dishonor God from same-sex marriage to so-called abortion “rights.” We’re told to be tolerant of alternate lifestyles, yet we are becoming more confined to where and, in some cases, how we present the Gospel.
June 2, 2013
As the central figure in all of human history, Jesus Christ stands alone as the mediator between God and man. No one has ever commanded people’s allegiance—and hatred—as has the Jesus who lived 2,000 years ago. While some say it’s okay to believe in God, they recoil at believing in Jesus. In this message: an honest look at the claims Jesus made, and the choice all of us must make regarding the Son of God.
