Rescued from Habitual Sin (Rescued)

June 19, 2016

Before people believe in Jesus, they have no choice: they will sin repeatedly, and they cannot stop themselves. After conversion, Christians do have a choice, no longer obligated to commit the sins they committed before. Breaking free from old patterns involves a process called “reckoning oneself dead unto sin but alive unto God.”

Built into every one of us is a tendency to focus on self. We see life through the lens of “how does this affect me?” After Cain killed Abel, he had no remorse. Rather, he bemoaned his fate of becoming a restless wanderer. For us, it’s only through the redemption Jesus provides that we can get our eyes off of ourselves.

In the Garden of Eden, an infection entered the human race. It has spread to every last one of us. The infection is sin, which means “missing the mark” and rebelling against God’s standards. Whether our sins are deemed big or small, the outcome is the same—an eternity of separation from God’s blessed presence.

In a single year, almost 37,000 Americans saw no way out of their misery, and then committed suicide. These people had one thing in common: they lost all hope that things could get better. They saw ending life as the only alternative. One of the great blessings God confers on those who believe in Jesus is hope: a hope that Paul says “does not disappoint.”

The value of placing your faith in something is all about the object of your faith, and not about the faith itself. You can believe that an idol is God, but that doesn’t change the fact that the idol is made of stone. Faith in the wrong place is worse than no faith at all, because it creates false confidence. And when it comes to our eternal destiny, the last thing we need is false confidence.

The book of Romans has played a major role in world history. By reading its pages, a man came to faith in Christ, a man whose actions began a spiritual tidal wave across Europe and the world. His name was Martin Luther. Let’s trace his story as he strove to know how he could be accepted before a holy God.

The Apostle Paul was trained in the Law, with a mind keen enough to argue before the Supreme Court. In Romans 3 he builds a case for the revolutionary idea that God demands perfect righteousness from us. But God then supplies what He demands by conferring the righteousness of Jesus on those who believe. This gracious act is called justification.

The Apostle Paul paid little attention to political correctness; some of what he wrote was quite unpopular. He catalogs the depth of human depravity in Romans 3. It is a list many would argue with, but it’s an accurate list nonetheless. Humanity’s spiritual condition is depraved, and we desperately need the grace of God through Jesus.

Football players call it “putting on your game face.” They project an air of invincibility whether or not they actually feel that way. To some degree, everyone projects an outward appearance that may not square with their inner reality.  With regard to salvation, it’s easy to make yourself and others believe that all is well when it’s not. But God delivers us from our self-justifying mindset.

Religion can prevent people from understanding the truth; it can breed the pride that says “I’m okay.” In Romans chapter two, Paul addresses the religious elite of his day and unveils how ceremony has insulated them from God’s analysis of their hearts.  Self-deception is especially thick when expressed in religious terms, and we must be rescued from it.

Reading the book of Romans is like shining a light into our darkness. In its pages we see ourselves as we really are.  Without God’s grace, we are capable of awful things. In fact, we’re morally bankrupt compared to our Creator. Let us probe the darkness of the human heart and view the amazing light God sheds upon those who believe in Jesus.
