Passing The Baton

July 3, 2011
For years, Joseph was the vice-regent of Egypt, having saved both Egypt and Israel from famine. In Exodus we read of a king, “who knew not Joseph.” This king forgot the faithfulness of God that had been displayed to the Israelites. The next generation always needs to know what the previous generation learned. As believers, it’s our duty to teach our kids that only God can make a nation great.

The book of Acts contains some of the most detailed descriptions of early sailing methods in all of ancient literature. We read of all the ways a crew attempted to avoid losing their ship when faced with a life-threatening storm. In the midst stood the Apostle Paul. He was certain of his destiny to reach Rome, and assured his terrified companions that all would be well.

In the first century, the gospel penetrated the Apostle Paul’s world in ever-widening circles. Under escort to face trial in Rome, Paul found himself explaining the word of God to various levels of Roman officials, and today, we’ll see him before a Roman king as a two-year imprisonment in Caesarea nears its end. We’ll watch as a member of royalty is brought face-to-face with his own sin and need of a Savior.

Each of us has a conscience. For example, we all know that stealing is wrong. We sense it when we lie, and feel a twinge of guilt. When people violate their consciences, they have to live with the inner conflict that violation causes. Today: we’ll meet a Roman governor whose conscience was triggered when he heard the truth of the gospel from the Apostle Paul.

Have you ever felt a compulsion within you to do something “out of the box,” so to speak? Maybe you’re impressed to speak to a stranger about Jesus, or perhaps you feel a need to give to someone in distress, something you don’t normally do. The Holy Spirit can move believers in unusual ways, and sometimes that moving can cause concern on the part of our friends and relatives. Today: you’ll hear the story of the Apostle Paul’s compulsion to go to Jerusalem: a move he was advised to not make.

When the light of the gospel came to Ephesus, a riot broke out. A thriving local business made idols for a major pagan temple, and when the Apostle Paul began to preach about the true God, interest in the false God Artemis began to dry up. As we read in Acts chapter 19, the Ephesian culture was indeed impacted. Today, we’ll learn about idols, ancient and modern, and how the gospel makes it clear that all idols must go.

When the light of the gospel shines, it shines in the hearts of individuals. These people then make up local assemblies of believers that affect the culture wherever they’re planted. During Paul’s time in what is now Greece, he founded several local churches, one of them in Corinth, a city known for its moral decay. Today: we’ll see how history has validated the Bible’s account of a businessman in Corinth, a man who became a believer and then made a difference where he was planted. Stay with us.

Democracy: it got its start in ancient Greece, home of phenomenal architecture and some great philosophers. It was to a group of these philosophers that the Apostle Paul spoke on a pivotal day in Athens two thousand years ago. A culture with many mythological gods heard about the true and living God, and things would never again be the same.

Despite the best efforts of those who want to redefine the family, one thing is clear: without mothers, there would be no families at all. On today’s broadcast, we celebrate Mother’s Day, and affirm the wonder of motherhood and the joys of raising children.

Given the mandate of taking the gospel to the Gentile world, the Apostle Paul went boldly into what is now modern Turkey and Greece. His early attempts to evangelize got him in hot water. In a city called Philippi, he and his partner Silas ended up being whipped and tossed into a high security cell in the local lockup. But as the light began to penetrate that pagan culture, a great miracle underscored the Gospel’s power.

The one certainty everyone faces is the end of life. As someone has said, “we’re all born with an expiration date.” Whether rich or poor, king or peasant, none of us can avoid dealing with what happens after that certain date. In First Corinthians chapter fifteen, the Apostle Paul wrote about the resurrection of Jesus, and why it’s our great hope, since those who believe in Him will also be raised from the dead and given new bodies for all eternity.
