Alcoholism, gambling, drugs, pornography are all addictions which can tear a family apart. Few marriages can survive when one or both spouses have compulsive behavior of any kind. Today we will learn how to find the way to freedom from addiction, a freedom that solves one of the toughest puzzles facing marriage today.

Many families have prodigal sons or daughters who have left home in rebellion against their parents’ values. The heartache is acute as moms and dads wonder where their children are, and, if they are safe. There was one prodigal son who came home in disgrace only to find himself treated like royalty. The gospel of Luke records the story. Today’s message of hope is for parents whose kids are in the far country, your son or daughter might one day come home to you as well.

A broken world is made up of broken families, families with broken marriages, and families with sons and daughters who have left home for a far country where they can do what they like and leave behind any thought of God. These “prodigals” desperately need to come home, but sadly, not all do.

Although we have given names like Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian to the church, to God, the church is “the bride of Christ.” It is an assembly of believers called out from the world to bear witness to God’s grace and mercy. The church has a glorious future, and it is called to be blameless as it awaits the marriage supper of the Lamb.

About Pastor Philip Miller

Philip Miller is the 17th Senior Pastor of The Moody Church. Philip holds a B.A in Pre-Seminary Bible from Cedarville University (’04) and a Th.M. in Pastoral Leadership and New Testament Studies from Dallas Theological Seminary (’10). His wife, Krista, also holds an Th.M. degree from DTS. They have four children: Claire, Violet, Cora, and Jude.

Philip is a visionary leader with over twelve years of ministry experience, including three at Christ Community Church in the western Chicago suburbs and nearly seven as Senior Pastor at Westwood Baptist in Olympia, WA. He believes people flourish as followers of Jesus when they live deeply in the gospel, experience the healing of true community, and join Jesus on mission in their world. He is committed to cultivating a gospel-centered church that welcomes spiritual explorers, promotes gospel clarity in culturally engaging ways, inspires passionate worship, fosters deep spiritual vitality, empowers people to holistic discipleship, and catalyzes a multiplication movement of gospel renewal both locally and globally.
