Pastor Philip Miller

Leading a Child to Assurance of Salvation

May 13, 2012
Why is it that so many kids who go to church, Sunday schools, camps, Christian schools, and pray the “right prayers” still walk away from their faith? Pastor Lutzer suggests that they may have never really been converted by God. Perhaps part of the reason why this happens lies in the fact that parents, and even some churches, have an inadequate view of conversion.

We are all conditioned to expect instant gratification. We have pills for pain, and fast food for hunger. Waiting for any reason seems unreasonable; after all, there is too much to do. Many would find the words of King David in Psalm 37 out of sync with the hectic pace of today’s world: “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently before Him.” Let’s learn some lessons from a great king, and remember who’s really in charge of our lives.

No psychiatrist’s couch can set us free from the inner turmoil of sin. When we violate God’s commands, the only thing that can relieve the distress is the knowledge that we have been forgiven. King David knew this very well. Although he had sinned greatly, he wrote about his personal experience of forgiveness in Psalm 32. Today, we will walk with David down the path toward renewed fellowship with God.

Some people see God as distant and uninvolved. But one Psalm portrays God’s care for His people as that of a shepherd’s care for his sheep. King David wrote the beloved Psalm 23 as a word picture which has never been equalled.

Some say God created the world like a clock. They believe that He wound it up and is now letting it run down. But the Bible tells us otherwise. God is not indifferent to what’s happening on our planet earth; in the Scriptures we see how engaged He really is. In fact, history is moving toward an inevitable conclusion — the return of Jesus to this earth.

If you had met the resurrected Jesus on the road to Emmaus, would you have recognized Him? ”Surely, yes!” you might say. But think again. Even some of His disciples did not know to Whom they were speaking. Today, join us for a look inward as we seek to make sure we personally hear the voice of the risen Son of God.

Before He entered Jerusalem on the donkey, Jesus cursed a fig tree that had not borne fruit. We might wonder “Why?” The sobering message of that event is our focus on this Palm Sunday edition of the Moody Church Hour.

How is it that a shoe salesman with only a grade-school education would end up preaching to enormous crowds on two continents? The only explanation: God chose to use a simple man to reach multitudes with the Gospel. One day, after D. L. Moody heard these words: “The world has yet to see what God can do with a man wholly consecrated to Him,” he vowed to be that man — wholly consecrated to God. In these messages, we will see how God honored that vow.

In the mid-1800s, those who sought opportunity in America looked westward. Among them was a young man named Dwight Lyman Moody. Moody left Boston and headed to Chicago without having any idea of what God was going to do through him. He ended up filling the treasure house of heaven with people won to Christ, and founded both The Moody Church and the Moody Bible Institute.

Divisions are tearing America apart: divisions between the haves and the have-nots, between those who give to society and those who only take from it. While some hail increased government activism, others fear that our democratic underpinnings are crumbling away into an era of tyranny. They see hard-won freedoms being stripped away, as a war is being lost without a single shot being fired. Many are beginning to ask: “Is God on America’s Side?”

As another election season approaches, some are asking if the “land of the free and the home of the brave” is losing its foundation. Our population is politically polarized while economic uncertainty is everywhere. Are you wondering, like many others, if God is already judging our land?
