God's Glory in Our Suffering

September 16, 2012
Hurting is part of life. Ask anyone in a cancer ward, facing a painful end of life with an incurable tumor. No one is exempt from suffering. Sooner or later, we all experience it. But believers are promised that suffering for the sake of Jesus will be rewarded. Today, another lesson on why nothing else matters but the glory of God — especially when we’re in pain.

It is a sign of the times: members of Congress are forced to resign when their sexual escapades come to light. Everyone deals with sex since everyone was created as a sexual being. No area of life is as challenging for a believer. 1 Corinthians was written to a church with serious moral issues. Today, we’ll go there to see our sex lives through the prism of the glory of God.

When economic hard times hit, people lose jobs, homes, and self-respect. Even those still employed feel the heat as they compensate for the loss of workers. The American lifestyle is an endangered species as we all learn to make do with less. Today we take a look at how focusing on the glory of God can help us weather economic storms.

At the core of God’s desire to bring glory to Himself is the plan of redemption. That plan was in place long before any of us were born — even before the fall in the Garden of Eden. Bringing many sons and daughters to glory was, and still is, His intention. Today we will hear message number three in a nine-part series on the glory of God.

Why do you go to church? To visit friends? To hear inspiring music? To be seen by others whose opinion you value? The reason we go to church should be to meet God so that we can extend and extol His glory. We gather to express to God His worth to us — that is what the word “worship” is all about.

What should motivate believers in daily life? As we mature in the faith, we come to realize more and more that it’s not about us. It’s about God. God’s glory fills Earth and the heavens. When we see our lives as part of a much larger plan, we understand that enhancing God’s glory is what life is all about.

Wealth has a way of making us indifferent to the needs around us. After all, “if I’m okay, you must be okay.” Jesus had some strong words for a church in Laodicea, a first-century place of prosperity. He said, “Because you are lukewarm, I will spew you out of my mouth.” What could cause this condemnation? Today, we will hear the final message in a series on what Jesus had to say to churches in the book of Revelation.

When opportunity knocks, it’s up to us to open the door — and it’s never more true than in our spiritual lives. “I have placed before you an open door which no one can shut.” These are the words of Jesus to a church in ancient Asia Minor — a place called Philadelphia. What was this door, and what does it mean to us in the 21st century?

“I have not found your works perfect before God. Remember what you have received and heard, obey it, and repent.” Strong words for a church. Words from Jesus Himself as recorded in Revelation 3. What words would Jesus have for your church, or mine? Today, we’ll learn what He said to the church at Sardis.

“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” These words of Jesus in Revelation 2 were directed to the church at Thyatira. So what can we learn from this church? For starters, we can learn about our personal holiness and how well we distance ourselves from those who flaunt their immorality. In today’s message, we’ll find stern words from the Lord about this church, and by implication, our own churches.
