The night sky over Bethlehem was suddenly ablaze with light. A host of angels appeared, announcing the birth of Jesus. Their audience was a group of terrified shepherds. No wonder the angels’ first words were “Fear not!”

In a world of increasing chaos, people yearn for something to hold onto. The Christmas season reminds us that God Himself invaded human time and space when Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Many families have prodigal sons or daughters who’ve left home in rebellion against their parents’ values. The heartache is acute as moms and dads wonder where their children are and if they’re safe. There was one prodigal son who came home in disgrace only to find himself treated like royalty. The gospel of Luke records the story, and it is a message of hope for all those who have kids in the far country. Your son or daughter might come home to you one day. Are you ready?

Our broken world is made up of broken families—families with broken marriages and families with “prodigals.” These are sons and daughters who have left home for a far country where they can do what they like, leaving their parents and God behind them. These “prodigals” desperately need to come home, but sadly, not all do.
