Getting Over It (When You've Been Wronged)

July 6, 2014

Some of us refuse reconciliation and hang on to our hurts until our knuckles turn white. Letting go would mean giving up the pain and anger that we want to hold on to. This message will call us to give them up and be healed of our anger.

Someone once said, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” When it comes to reconciliation, people will stay divided until one person takes a step, the step Jesus spoke of when He said, “Go to your brother.” And we must go if the cycle of mistrust is to be broken.

It is almost fashionable to sue someone these days. Court dockets are full as people demanding payback for injustice. Sadly, too many of these cases involve Christians. The Apostle Paul has some pointed words for those who would like to haul a fellow believer into court.

“Someone’s out to get me.” That’s what David must have thought as King Saul tried to kill him for ten long years. Many people are under constant attack by those who want to do them harm. What drives these “spear throwers?” And how do we as believers handle long- running attacks from others? What do we do when reconciliation is not possible?

Families can be torn apart by feuds: long-running animosities usually caused by someone’s past unjust actions. Whether due to imagined or real hurt, some feuds go on for generations. Unless the cycle is broken, hatred can consume blood relatives. Is there a way out?

Jacob and Esau are classic examples of how different two children can be. Just like any family, conflict was almost inevitable. Jacob the younger connived the birthright of Esau the older, and the lifelong battle began.

Jesus said, “The thief comes to steal, kill and destroy.” Some people are destroyers, intent on ruining the lives of others. In the Bible, this kind of person is typified by Cain, who, in a fit of rage, killed his own brother at the dawn of humanity.

Spanish bullfighters often use a bright red cloth to enrage “El Toro” the bull and get him to charge. This is the origin of the expression “seeing red” when we are offended. When someone treats us badly, our first reaction is to strike back. Yet as Christians, we are called upon to respond quite differently. As the Apostle Paul taught the believers in Corinth, is it not better to suffer wrong than to sue a fellow believer?

In today’s culture, success is often measured by advanced education. Yet a church that now celebrates 150 years of ministry was founded by a man who left school after the fifth grade. Dwight Lyman Moody wanted to be a great shoe salesman, but God had other plans, and millions of lives have been changed through his total commitment to the will of God.

Some people are quickly forgotten. For others, however, their memory is still alive long after their passing. The legacy of D. L. Moody is seen in the millions of lives touched by his preaching, his schools and the Moody Church in Chicago, now celebrating 150 years of continuous ministry.

It is human nature to want to be in control and manipulate circumstances in our favor. The Old Testament patriarch Jacob was a schemer who sought to gain every advantage he could. It took a dramatic intervention in his life to get him to realize that God was in control, and not him. The lesson he learned can become our lesson as well.
