The journey of Abraham has taken him to the great trees of Mamre, where he encounters three mysterious visitors. On a day of high drama, Abraham and Sarah find themselves in the presence of God, and learn about the son they will soon have, and about judgment on the city of Sodom.

A covenant in the Bible indicates a solemn promise. In the book of Genesis, God made promises to Abraham, promises that were not conditional, promises of a land and posterity to occupy that land. In Genesis 17 God expands and clarifies his covenant with Abraham, and ultimately, Isaac is born as the son of promise.

Abraham had God’s promise of posterity, but he also had a problem: his wife’s apparent infertility. Rather than wait for God’s timing, he took his wife’s advice and had a son by their maid Hagar. In that one act was born the Arab-Israeli conflict still tearing apart the Middle East. Today we hear how God was faithful to both lines of Abraham’s seed, despite his rash action.

Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer's teaching brings listeners to a deeper understanding of God and His purposes in our lives. "We have one single purpose [for the program]," says Pastor Lutzer, "We want people to be confronted with the reality of God and their need for personal obedience to His Word."

When a believer embarks on a life of faith, that believer will inevitably learn how to give. On his journey, Abraham met a mysterious man named Melchizidek, a priest of God Most High, and gave him a tenth of all the goods he had. This story in Genesis 14 is our focus today, as we learn how our faith impacts our resources.

Too many people these days operate on the premise that what’s mine is mine. They don’t see God as the real owner of all that they have. Abraham had the insight to know that God was in charge, and so he let his nephew Lot take first pick of some desirable real estate. Today: the expensive outcome of living by faith.

Almost everyone tells a little white lie from time to time. In some situations, that may seem to be the best course of action. Abraham thought so early on in his journey to the Promised Land. But as we’ll see, sin always has consequences, and Abraham had to learn some tough early lessons in the school of faith.

He began life as Abram, and ended as Abraham. Called out of a pagan land by God, Abraham became the father of the nation Israel. For much of his life he was on the move: on a journey to a promised land he never got to enjoy. As a result, his life was one of faith, as ours must be if we are to please God.

The little town of Bethlehem is only six miles south of Jerusalem. Today it is a Palestinian town, and Muslim calls to prayer echo across the shepherd’s fields. But if those fields could talk, they would shout what the angels proclaimed two millennia ago: “Today is born unto you a Savior.”

Many people do not know that the word in the Bible translated “angel” really means “messenger.” There is one angel we especially connect with bringing a message. That angel is Gabriel, who announced to Mary that she would bear the Christ child. For a sinful human race, no more important message was ever sent.
