A Man Named Martin - Part 1: The Man Session 4

August 4, 2015
In A Man Named Martin - Part 1: The Man viewers encounter a 15th-century religious reformer from Germany who broke ranks with the Catholic Church. This Bible study is the first of a three-part series devoted to Martin Luther -- a monk whose Spirit-inspired grasp of God's justification of sinners through faith in the Savior was the cornerstone of the Protestant Reformation.

In this five-session Bible study, Luther's life and times are examined through the lens of history, religion and theology. Expanding on commentary from Rev. Gregory Seltz, Speaker forThe Lutheran Hour, numerous scholars add their expertise and perspective to render an illuminating portrait of the life of this extraordinary human being.

The influence and impact of Luther's life is the stuff of serious study. As a forlorn sinner feeling lost and desperate before a stern and exacting Judge, Luther desponded of all hope for eternity. But as one who came to cling to the Spirit-delivered truths of justification by faith and the liberty believers experience by God's grace, he rebounded to become a triumphant ambassador for the Gospel.

The details of Luther's life -- his childhood with his parents Hans and Margaret, his university pursuits, his decision to become a monk, his protestation of Catholic practices, his voluminous and erudite scholastic output, his life in hiding, and his roles as husband and father -- are all considered in this study. A Man Named Martin is a fresh and explorative look at an individual who, down through the centuries, has increased in importance and vitality to the Christian church.

To this day, Luther's staunch faith and the extent of his outreach, remain a standard for Christ-centered living to believers in the 21st-century.

The passage from unbelief or antagonism toward God to faith in Christ as Lord and Savior is a road that's different for each person. Follow the stories of four individuals from widely dissimilar pasts that arrived at the same conviction: Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior and because He is they must tell others about it. Hosted by Rev. Dr. John Nunes, this four-session Bible study offers the viewpoints of four people who have made a remarkable journey. Theirs has been a pilgrimage from the outer edges of unbelief and apathy to a place where today Jesus Christ commands their heartfelt devotion. The road to faith was not easy for them, and many were the times when abandoning it seemed the preferred route to travel. Still, the persistence of the Holy Spirit's work in their lives brought about a different outcome, with an eternal transformation. Consider their lives. With an upbringing marred by violence and abuse from her belligerent, alcoholic father, one woman's journey was set in motion by a record album. For one young man, an allegiance to evolutionary theory and science trumped any idea of the spiritual at work in his life, until he grasped the nature of faith. For an Orthodox Jew it was a lengthy apprenticeship-in the back row of a Christian church-that became for him a brand new kind of life. Finally, for a New Age stargazer, a woman deep into Eastern religions who charted other people's futures by astrology, it was an attempt to get Christianity out of her system that eventually won her over. As with all Men's NetWork Bible studies, The Journey from Unbelief to Faith has an in-depth discussion guide that focuses on each session's topic, gives relevant Scripture references, offers pointed questions to promote thought and participant interaction, and contains numerous Internet links so users can explore session subjects online.

The man driving the Christmas story in this Bible study is none other than Joseph, the foster-father of Jesus. Join us as host Rev. Gregory Seltz, Speaker for The Lutheran Hour, sheds light on one of the New Testament's unsung heroes in Joseph: Carpenter of Steel. Adding historical perspective to this study is scholar and best-selling author Dr. Paul L. Maier. Joseph is a man appointed by God to do extraordinary things. Written by LHM's Theological Editor and Writer Pastor Wayne Palmer, this four-part study examines the fascinating life and times of this New Testament "average Joe" in rich and absorbing detail. "In researching and writing this Bible study my respect and admiration for our Savior's foster-father has grown amazingly," Palmer said.It might be hard to swallow that your betrothed is with child-and by the Holy Spirit no less. But that would be only the first of many things Joseph would have to deal with. Beyond that bombshell, there was the inconvenient trek to Bethlehem with the pregnant Mary to fulfill the census, finding a suitable place for the baby to be born, later trekking down to Egypt to escape Herod's homicidal directive and, finally, the no-little matter of raising the Son of God! Enhancing this Bible study are more than 50 Internet links. These provide historical and cultural details on things like Augustus' census, the birthplace of Jesus, the wise men, the lunacy of Herod the Great, extra-biblical stories about Joseph, the question of Jesus' brothers and sisters, and more.
