God's Great Outdoors - Tim Thomason

March 14, 2016
Gerry is at the Archery Trade Associations, 2016 Outdoor Trade Show held in Louisville, Kentucky on this week’s Trail To Adventure! In this interview he is visiting the Nature Blind booth connecting with the business founder and owner, Tim Thomason. These ground blinds and animal game feeders are well camouflaged as they look like tree stumps. Tim shares how on his first Texas deer hunt; the outfitter put him in an elevated shooting house and gave him a can of wasp spray. Not liking heights or those flying pests, he did his morning devotions and then, he asked God for a good idea. God answered and the tree stump shaped blind was the result. The biggest surprise is lives are being changed for eternity as the company products have scripture verses incorporated in their bark design and it’s doing a work for God!

This week's Trail To Adventure! program guest is the well known New Yorker, wildlife photographer and outdoor writer Charlie Alsheimer. Gerry drops in on Charlie at his studio/office on his farm in the Empire State and the two discuss how Charlie got involved in the outdoors. Charlie also shares that it was during his tour in Vietnam, and because of his boss there, an avid photographer, he decided to purchase photography equipment while in the Army and got started learning this craft. Interestingly enough, he cannot remember even taking one photo before this time. Charlie reflects on how he started doing wildlife photography and then later began writing an article for a local paper. With time he became a speaker at church outreach events and now has seen many come to Christ at game dinners and such.

Looking toward the coming months and getting outside more, this week’s guest will give all real safety thoughts to consider first. Kenny Ratliff begins this interview by describing great times in the outdoors with his dad and reflects on how he introduced him to spending time afield and stream. This later in his life became where he directed his vocation and passed up opportunities to wear a suit and tie to work. Kenny then goes into the story of how on Father’s Day some years back, and at the same time, the family was celebrating his dad’s and his youngest brother’s birthdays, something tragic happened. Kayaking on an area river, both of these two loved ones were taken home to be with the Lord because of a boating accident.

Gerry and David discuss how we are without excuse in God’s creation not to see that there is a great Creator God. Also looked at, is “The Great Commission,” and the ways outdoorsmen can reach others with the love of Jesus Christ, to keep them from the flames of Hell when they die!

Gerry visits the Creation Museum that is located in Petersburg, Kentucky with Mark Looy, from Answers in Genesis. Mark shares about this apologetic ministry focusing on the importance of the first book of the Bible and the new exhibit to open in July 2016 called the Ark Experience. This life size Ark is expected to have 1.4 million visitors in the first year and is a way to evangelize those who come to explore this rescue craft straight out of the Bible! God’s Great Outdoors, Family Fun Fossil Hunt’s annual adventure on August 20th in Ohio, is just a little over an hour from the Museum, and the two would be a great summer combo trip. Along this year is Dr. John Whitmore, who teaches geology and paleontology at Cedarville University, as he’ll share with the hunters and the discussion will revolves around Noah’s flood.

The author of the book “The Ripple Effect”, Todd Freiwald, shares about his youth and learning how important survival skills were in his outdoor adventures. Fire, shelter, food and water are the four essential elements one needs to stay alive for an extended period in the outdoors. Coming to Christ and then becoming a father made him realize how important walking with the Lord was. So as his children grew, he developed a survival program that taught them, not only to survive in the outdoors, but also to survive everyday life by applying principles illustrated in God’s Word to the four survival skills. This is an excellent book to help with mentoring one’s children or in a group setting for churches, ministries, or Christian camps.

Gerry is in the city of Warner Robins, GA where God’s Great Outdoors put on one of their Trail To Adventure! Conferences. Designed to help equip pastors and lay men on the “How To” of doing evangelistic outdoor outreach, these events see a host of speakers who come and share with those attending on how to get started or expand an interest based ministry. Gerry is joined by Terry Manis of Wildlife Ministry wildlifeministry.com focusing on “His World, His Wildlife”. Terry and his wife Wanda bring an assortment of creatures to the speaking events and locations that have him. He does an incredible job of correlating the creatures he brings in and handles, to God's Word and how it applies to us.

On this week's Trail To Adventure! Gerry’s interview is with Dennis and Peggy Robinson who relate an experience that happened when they were dairy farmers in Wisconsin. Dennis placed himself before God and everything in his life was about him and what he wanted in life. His wife Peggy had turned him over to the Lord and said, "You need to deal with him, Lord, he is yours." Two days later Dennis was pulled half way through a hay wagon mechanical apparatus and was not expected to live from the massive injuries he received. Yet, God had a plan, and it included transforming a man to be what God wanted him to be.

Part of this interview is a revisit with the Women’s Bassmaster Fishing Tournament Pro, Pam Martin Wells at a fishing retreat at Rushing Wind Retreat Center in Canada. Pam has accumulated 24 National Titles, 7 Angler of the Year Awards, won 3 Bassmaster Events and 1 Woman’s Bassmaster Tour since she started fishing in 1986. She is joined in Ontario, Canada by her husband Steven, as both were speakers at the fishing outreach they were attending in the far north. Pam tells how she came to Christ and is very shy in the public speaking arena, yet has answered the call as God has opened doors for her to do so. “Never Say No” is the title of the tract that she wrote to tell the story of how she came to Jesus, and Pam has seen firsthand how sharing what the Creator God did in her life has seen others come to Christ. One woman was killed in a car crash a month later, so Pam looks forward to seeing her there in Heaven!
