God's Great Outdoors - Dr. John Whitmore

July 4, 2016
The God’s Great Outdoors Fun Family Fossil Hunt is the topic of this week’s program as Gerry interviews Dr. John Whitmore about this adventure. (The location is stroller and wheelchair accessible as well, it clearly is open to the entire family.)The event takes place annually in August, and those attending can keep the fossils that they find. How hard is it to find these fossils? Dr. John Whitmore, who teaches young earth geology at Cedarville University, has even had two blind students take his class and they are able to find fossils at this Ohio location. The two discuss all the evidence of Noah’s flood, and how there are scientists who misinterpret many of the facts of this biblical event.

On this week’s Trail To Adventure! the radio program God’s Great Outdoors reaches it's the 20th year anniversary of broadcast! First airing July 6 of 1996, on WCDR radio out of Cedarville, Ohio and today’s guest Paul Gathnay, was the station manager back when it started. It was Paul Gathany who took a chance on the crazy idea Gerry had for a radio program called God’s Great Outdoors. Paul and Gerry reflect on the way God worked when it came to the radio program coming on air and the many that helped Gerry and his wife Cyndi along the way with the ministry. It is a perfect example of how when God calls us to a mission for the Kingdom, He’ll always provide all needed, so “To God Be All The Glory!”

As God’s Great Outdoors approaches the 20th year of airing the radio program, this interview is a look back over the ministry’s time. Gerry visits with a retired Ken Beck, the past owner of the Black Widow Bow Company, in the rolling hills of Ken’s home located in Nixa, Missouri. The two look back on their first meeting in person at The Trophies of Grace White Tail Deer Hunt in southeast Ohio. This annual event has been going on for over 23 years now, put on by a chapter of Christian Bowhunters of America, The Lord of the Harvest Archery Club. Ken discusses his life’s journey and how he was blessed to be used by God to help the ministry of God’s Great Outdoors get started in July of 1996. Ken speaks on outdoor ministry and how important it is that the listeners consider being involved, as Christianity is under fire.

On a visit to Dr. John Whitmore’s office at Cedarville University in Ohio, Gerry got to meet Dr. Steve Austin. As an undergrad geology student at Washington State, Dr. Austin was able to explore probably the most significant geological event in the 20th century, the eruption of Mt. Saint Helen’s. This was a turning point for him as he was able to watch and discover firsthand how this catastrophe affected the landscape, including a creation of a one-fortieth scale of the Grand Canyon, in only one day. During this time Dr. Austin switched from a Christian “old earth” geologist, to a “young earth” geologist, believing the biblical account of 6000 years of earth’s age. All from seeing layer upon layer of earth that was laid down by volcanic eruptions in minutes, not hundreds of thousands of years as he had been taught.

Russ Miller, who is the founder of the Creation, Evolution & Science Ministries, visits with Gerry and they talk about the battle over this topic. Many scientific facts point to our Creator God speaking our world and the universe into existence. Russ guides tours in Arizona’s Grand Canyon, showing from the rock and fossil records, evidence that backs up the Bible’s account. He shares about the struggles that come to ministries that stand on the Word of God, sometimes refuting what world science has to say. It was during one of these incredibly low times that Russ Miller asked God to make Himself clear in his mind that he was really doing God’s will in educating and equipping others through the ministry of Creation, Evolution & Science Ministries. God clearly showed His love and support for him and his life’s direction.

Gerry’s at a God’s Great Outdoors winter/spring Trail To Adventure! conference the ministry conducts across the USA, for pastors and laymen, teaching about the numerous ways to do outdoor outreach. At this evangelistically directed instructional event located in Green Bay, Wisconsin he is joined on this week’s program by Pastor Paul Carlson. The two look at the huge potential of reaching out to the un-churched people around us who spend time recreating in God’s Creation, but don’t know the Creator, Jesus Christ. Paul also shares on his book titled, “A Guide To Bugling Bulls” that he has written and is a compilation of his years of hunting elk. Besides a tool to help one hunt elk, it is a devotional that reflects on the many true stories and can direct anyone in a closer walk with God or to begin that new journey.

Gerry is at the Rushing Wind Retreat Center in Ontario, Canada during a couple’s marriage event, as he visits with this week’s guest. Keith Cline tells how as a rural mail carrier in north central Nebraska, he listens to God’s Great Outdoors while running his route. After hearing of the couples fishing retreats, he asked his wife Lori if she’d want to go “up there” for their 35th wedding anniversary. “Yes!” was her answer and when he booked, they landed the honeymoon cabin “to boot!” Keith also shares about the Special Youth Challenge deer & spring turkey hunts he is a part of in Nebraska and takes place in other locations across the nation. Put on for disabled and terminally ill youngsters, the ministry is seeing youth and adults come to Jesus Christ. Plus, Keith relates on the Select Arrow Ministry that allows him to speak across the country on Isaiah 49:2, “…he made me into a polished arrow…” and how God shapes us all.

At the Trail To Adventure! conferences that GGO conducted across the USA, one of the key points is teaching the “4 P’s”. They consist of “Prayer, Planning, Perpetration & More Prayer!” This is also what the guest on this week’s broadcast, Steve Finn, practiced – prayer and more prayer. The founder of Chestnut Mountain Ranch, located near Morgantown, West Virginia, relates on how much he and his family sought God in prayer. This became a practice before and during (is done even today), as they looked toward establishing a boy’s home and school to reach troubled youngsters, with the goal to create Godly men. Having been in a single parent home and later a police officer he has experienced the same struggles these boys do, feeling led to make a difference in their lives. After working at one of the boy’s homes in Georgia, he and his wife targeted West Virginia with its high dropout and suicide rate!

Pastor Dan Williams from Manitoba, Canada visits with Gerry at the June couple’s retreats that take place each summer at the Rushing Wind Retreat Center in Ontario, an hour above International Falls, Minnesota. The two share how the location is remote to the point that those who attend are brought in by float planes. This is a fishing trip that many folks dream of, and so opens the door for bringing along unsaved friends and relatives who need Jesus. Dan tells the story of his desire to catch a big lake trout and despite the bad weather conditions decided to go way up lake and try for one. On heading back, the storm had really blown in and the wind wouldn’t allow the boat through a narrow, shallow area. Dan tried gunning the motor and broke the shear pin, which was only the beginning of the adventure!

This week’s broadcast is on Lyme Disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Gerry visits with Billy Parker and his wife Laura during the annual Archery Trade Assn. Show that was held in Indianapolis, Indiana in February of 2015. Both of these outdoor recreationalists share stories of the adventures and the battle that is encountered because of a tiny insect at least eight months of the year. Ticks! Laura has been infected with both Lyme Disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, but early detection helped in her treatment being a quick ordeal. Billy however, went a number of years before his Lyme Disease was discovered causing extended and daily treatments that lasted many months. Their hope is as they tell this story, is it will help keep others from having to go through the same mess they experienced!

The listeners may remember the famous escape artist, Harry Houdini. (1874–1926) He was an American illusionist, stunt performer and it was said he could get out of anything! This week’s guest on the radio broadcast is from Realtree Outdoors TV Show, David Blanton. While hunting whitetails in Kansas he was told of a monster buck that had been seen for several summers, but disappeared in the fall when buck’s antlers harden, reappearing again the next summer. Where was he going? Thus “Houdini” became the whitetail’s moniker. David became obsessed with hunting this incredible animal to a point where the Holy Spirit revealed his heart wasn’t right with God, needing turned 180 degrees; it’s quite a true story!
