God's Great Outdoors

Dean Hulce

Chuck Buck

May 23, 2011
This week's interview is with Chuck Buck from Buck Knives.  He shares some tips on the sharpening and care of the products they produce, plus some history of the company.  Chuck also tells the story of how his dad’s hand was almost cut off and crushed by a meat grinder.  After the surgery, despite how it looked, God healed his hand.  Without this having taken place, it is likely there would not be a Buck Knives today.

Dr. John Whitmore, who teaches geology and paleontology at Cedarville University, shares with Gerry how he became perhaps the world’s leading authority on fossilized fish. John explains how his exploration and studies of the fossil deposits found in the Green River Basin of southwest Wyoming led him to be able to get his doctorate. Gerry and John discuss the annual fossil hunt they do each August in Ohio, which is only an hour away from the Creation Museum. Those joining them can keep the fossils they find, and all of this information is available on GGO’s website on the Events page.

This week's interview is with one of the continent’s, if not the world’s, leading authorities on falconry. Floyd Presley has been training and hunting with birds of prey for many years. He also, after coming to know Jesus Christ as his Lord and Creator, decided to use his hawks and falcons to reach others for the Lord. Each year he gets the opportunity to speak in numerous venues, and demonstrate what he is talking about with the birds that fly at his command.

The Special Youth Challenge of Northwest Iowa takes severely disabled, mentally handicapped and terminally ill youth on deer and turkey hunts each year. Not only is this program blessing the young people and their families, but some of them, along with the area sportsmen who assist in these events, are coming to Christ each year. Gerry talks with Phil Driver, one of the directors of this continually effective and expanding outdoor outreach.

Michael & Lisa Drackley from Camp Forest Springs located in Wisconsin’s northeastern woods, share with Gerry about this unique facility. Gerry has visited a number of Christian camps, and quite often there is at least one staff member at these camps who has graduated from the Camp Forest Springs training program. If the listeners have been thinking about getting involved with camp ministry, this is the place where they can become fully equipped and trained in year-round outdoor adventures for winning campers to Christ.

Gerry joins Jim McNamara near Lima, OH for a turkey hunt and to visit Jim’s taxidermy studio. Jim mounts all types of animals, but birds are his specialty. He has hunted ducks all over the country, and it was on one of these hunts that he almost lost his life. Jim shares about that particular day and how in the middle of the event, at peace with God, he listened as the Holy Spirit spoke to him to act a certain way during the episode that saved his life.

Sam Wagner and Gerry discuss the Fishers of Men Retreats and couples retreats held each June in Canada. Rushing Wind is a fly-in adventure that has had an impact on numerous lives through the years. Sam also shares about his father’s involvement with the Pocket Testament League, and growing up in Africa as a teenager. Sam had the opportunity to hunt many big game animals the last two years of high school.  Sam is on the board of the Pocket Testament League, as well as the board of God’s Great Outdoors.

Looking at how fearfully and wonderfully made we are is the topic of this week's program. Gerry visits with Dr. Richard Swenson to discuss how with mathematics and science used to look at creation, it is impossible to believe that it happened by chance. Together they look at a number of illustrations used in Dr. Swenson’s book More Than Meets the Eye.  Clearly, we are without excuse not to see there is a Creator of the creation around us.

On this program, Gerry visits with Wildlife Biologist Dave Battle, who works in the Anchorage, Alaska area. Dave takes the listeners back to the days when he was growing up, and how the “the good ol’ boys” his dad ran around with all believed in God and went to church.  So, he figured it must be something he should do, too. Later, when he was in college, everything he was hearing pointed away from God and to evolution. Something happened in one of his classes that made him realize there had to be an intelligent designer and it could not have happened by chance. The point is, there is a Creator God, and the evidence is all around us in the outdoors and the creatures that live there.

Gerry visits with Ken Ham at The Creation Museum in Parkersburg, KY near the Cincinnati, OH airport. Ken relates the difficulties that arose with zoning permits when they first tried to build in a different location. Clearly, the door had shut. They chose not to fight it, and waited for God’s leading.  They now have a museum that is far bigger than they had ever planned on being able to build, with additional room for other projects. God is in control, if we allow Him.

When Gerry visited a church in Hornbeck, LA where he was speaking, he interviewed Rodney Johnson who coordinated this event. Rodney shares with Gerry about the preparations to make this kind of outreach happen, and how the key ingredient is prayer. Game dinners are a powerful way to reach men in the community, and Rodney shares stories of changed lives.
