Outdoor photography legend and writer for Deer & Deer Hunting magazine, Charlie Alsheimer, talks about the transformation he has seen in his years in the business. Charlie was one of the first men ever to start speaking at game dinners and is in such demand that he is normally booked up for three years in advance. Gerry and Charlie talk about the opportunities that we have through God’s creation to share the Gospel, and what kind of dramatic changes that have also been seen in our society since he began writing and snapping photos for a living.

Hank shares how things happen in our lives, the loss of loved ones, that we can’t always explain, might not even be able to understand completely until the day that we are in the presence of our Creator and Lord Jesus Christ.

The owner of Formula Boats, Scott Porter, takes Gerry and the listeners on a history walkthrough how the business started with just simple 14-foot boats by his father years ago. The company now manufactures cabin cruisers, some as large as 48 feet in length. Scott shares how he is involved with a group of churches that conducts Sunday services on a lake so that people who would not normally get into a church can pull their boat up and have the opportunity to hear the word of God shared right there on the water.

This week is an interview with game call expert, Harold Knight, who is part founder of Knight & Hale Game Call Company. Harold talks about some funny things that have happened in his life, and how his good buddy David loves to use these stories when he speaks at game dinners. Harold also tells the amazing story of how the very first goose he ever shot when he was 11 years old had a band on its leg from a man in Canada with a Bible verse on it. This was the beginning of him praying to receive Jesus Christ as Savior.

Bob Hodgdon of Hodgdon Powder is this week’s guest. The interview takes place at a The Trail to Adventure! Conference in Duluth, MN. Bob, one of the guest speakers at the conference that teaches pastors and laymen how to do outdoor ministry, shares his testimony about an explosion at their Pyrodex factory and the results that caused him to see his need to receive Jesus as Savior. Bob reflects on his childhood, the conferencehe is speaking at, and shares about the transformation in his life because of that terrible accident.

They’re taking over the entire town, and no, this isn’t just some science fiction horror movie! Tim Griffiths shares with Gerry about the ministry of Shepherd’s Staff located in Rexford, Kansas. As businesses in this town struggle and have to close their doors, this ministry looks to purchase the buildings and turn them into facilities where churches, groups, and individuals can come for Christ-centered retreats. The ministry is also doing fall pheasant hunts to reach men and boys, and just beginning to see their spring turkey hunts take off as well.

We pull out the metal detectors on this week’s program as Kevin Clark is the guest at Rushing Wind Retreat Center. Besides talking about this summer adventure at Rushing Wind, the men’s and couple’s retreats that take place every year and Kevin shares how he taught himself to fish as a young boy. The gift of a metal detector when he was young from his mother opened the door to an insatiable interest in history and coin collecting. Today Kevin also uses metal detecting as an opportunity to get into people’s lives and also share Christ Jesus.

The founder of Fathers in the Field, John Smithbaker, talks about how not having a father when he grew up, and those wounds, helped in starting this ministry. Reaching out and mentoring boys who have no dads in their lives over a significant period of time can change who they are, and allow them to see that God the Father is different than their earthly dad. John shares about his growing up years, and how his outdoor passion moved him into a position at the top of Brunton located in Wyoming.

Gerry visits with Ed Gannon, who lives in the Montgomery, Alabama area.  Ed discusses his farm, and the quality deer management they practice. Besides the opportunities that some of the men visiting have, this is also the place where many youngsters get their first time opportunity to shoot a deer. This interview includes an amazing story of how a man from Russia, on coming to Ed’s farm, came into a God-directed encounter that saved a baby’s life in the country of Russia. An incredible story that will certainly touch a listener’s heart!

God’s Great Outdoors’ Board member Larry Guthrie, who also is part of the ministry Harvest Home Farm in Pigeon Falls, Wisconsin, visits with Gerry on this week’s program. They discuss how this farm-based ministry is connecting people with the Creator and the Provider of all good things that we have to eat. They also talk about the incredible opportunity that couples have to join them in Canada in the summer at Rushing Wind.

These not only include his wife, Barb, but also has been a great avenue for him to get close to his boys as they have grown up. Lynn tells the story of how his oldest son was killed in a snowmobile accident, and the importance of making the most of the time we have with our kids.

About Dean Hulce

Dean Hulce was born and raised in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where he spent every weekend in the woods or on the water with family and friends.  After graduation he married his highschool sweetheart Linda.  They have two boys and 5 grandchildren. 

Dean has written for several hunting and fishing magazines over the last 25 years. He has guided  hunters and fisherman as well as run hunting fishing camps from South Texas to Alaska and many states and provinces in between.  In the last 10 years Dean has written a daily devotional that goes out to thousands each day. He had published 5 devotional books, using hunting stories to bring a message to people.  He has traveled across the USA speaking to groups, spreading the gospel through outdoor experiences.

Dean has no doubt that God has prepared him his entire life for his position with God's Great Outdoors Ministry
