Still Waiting for Superman

November 10, 2010
Fixing the System "Waiting for Superman" hits the theaters this week, as the Messianic character of American education betrays itself again. So Kevin Swanson goes to the documentary's website, and clicks on "Fix the System." But somehow, that didn't fix the system. Sarah Palin gets her own reality show, and discourages those Neanderthal stay-at-home moms, who seem to be using up their lives trying to re-establish the nuclear family in the 21st century. We're not sure that she's going to fix the system either. But then there's another conservative evangelical pastor in Denver who's not sure but that God may be just fine with homosexuals serving communion. Interesting observations on the continuing demise of the western faith.

Another National Catastrophe. The most debted nation in the world. The weakest families in the western world. The highest divorce rate in the world. Now, America is quickly becoming the most unhealthy nation in the world. With 70% of its population overweight, up from 13% in 1970, doctors expect that 30% of Americans will have diabetes in the next 20 years. Don't look to Christians for setting an example in this area either. A whopping 76% of Christians are overweight. So Kevin Swanson asks Dr. Scott Stoll, MD on why our bodies break down and what to do about it. For fathers who love their families and desire the best physical health for them, this program serves as a big wake-up call!

The Power of the Visual Medium In the battle between truth and error, it seems that Christians lose every time especially in the public forum. The visual medium is a powerful way to externalize and seal the powerful ideas contained in God's Word. But how does one do this? Kevin Swanson interviews Colin Gunn, the producer of movies like Shaky Town (on homosexual activism) and the Monstrous Regiment of Women (on egalitarianism). What is the purpose of the visual medium, and how does it stir us to action and solidify our commitments to battle the enemy in the war of the worldviews?

How Theologians are Contributing to the Rise of Socialism Here Kevin Swanson reviews the recent movie, “Agenda – Grinding America Down,” the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival 2011 Winner. America is moving towards communism, but what are Christian theologians saying about it? Kevin looks at three different theological perspectives concerning government, from Wayne Grudem, John MacArthur, and Carl Trueman. He concludes that Wayne Grudem is the most balanced, but all of them are reticent to apply God’s law to the condemnation of a socialist social order. Theologians have and will continue to pave the way for what happened in the Soviet Union and Germany.

Loving the Church The Church is a little passe' with some folks today. The music is boring. The sermons are boring. The people get together, and then they don't get along. After seven church splits and eighteen church squabbles, some just want to get up and leave. Our children and grandchildren are leaving enmasse. But, Scott Brown calls this church a precious body, for which Jesus Christ died. As director of the National Center for Family Integrated Churches, Scott Brown is on a campaign to encourage families to the love of the church. Is it time to rediscover the body-life of the church of Christ?

The Pendulum Swings. . . Sort of. . . The pendulum swings every election. Last election, the pendulum swung to the left about 35 degrees. So we watched with interest as the pendulum to the right, last night. And. . . it was only a ten degree swing. But there is always home, in a tiny minority of men and women who believe in principle. Kevin Swanson and Dave Buehner discuss the national election results, early Wednesday morning following Tuesday voting.

The Destruction of American Society 'Transparency International' has for many years published an index of the level of corruption of nations around the globe. The United States has been slipping in the index for many years and in this past year’s assessment it has fallen out of the top twenty to the twenty-second position of least corrupt nations. This is not because other nations have become less corrupt, but because the cancer of corruption is spreading on our shores. In fact corruption is so entrenched and spreading so fast that 'Transparency International' may have been generous in their original assessment. Dave Buehner looks at some examples of corruption and the only solution that has or can ever lead to a free society without corruption.

Mike Farris - Chairman, HSLDA Thus far, the homeschooling movement has sustained two major attacks. Some thought it would produce inferior academic results, calling for onerous government controls. This was answered by a flood of studies on homeschool academic performance. Following this, came the attacks on homeschool socialization. Some thought that homeschooled graduates would be incapable of functioning in society – raising families themselves, getting a good college education, or engaging in the economy. This also was answered by studies on socialization and surveys of homeschool graduates. So the movement grew in numbers and epistemological self-consciousness. Now, homeschooling appears to be changing the social fabric of families everywhere. These kids did not attend socialist schools. They don’t think like socialists. They don’t vote like socialists. They won’t support a socialist nation. Now, that’s a problem, for the socialists. These homeschoolers are guilty as charged. Mike Farris, chairman of HSLDA, sounds an alarm on this edition of Generations concerning this third wave attack on Home Education in America.

More Hate Crimes Laws? Some pollster is telling us that the majority of Americans believe churches contribute to "gay suicides." More fodder for hate crimes legislation, perhaps? Here the Generations boys grapple with how churches contribute to "gay suicides," when many churches still preach against both homosexuality AND suicide. As Kevin Swanson works on his 2010 ballot, he explains why he does not vote for congressmen who vote for hate crimes laws.

Worldviews in Conflict Humanists, Muslims, and Christians will produce different social orders. The decentralized tyrannies produced by polygamy often compete with the more centralized forms we find in an economy that controls 64% of the GNI. But what is an evangelical pastor doing calling for more state control of home education? Kevin Swanson jumps into the war of the worldviews, pointing out that the church has often contributed to the persecution of those seeking freedom from the all-pervasive state.

Avoiding Socialist Medicine “We’re all socialists now!” That’s what Newsweek announced to all of us a year or so ago. But what if we don’t want to be socialists? Can we NOT be socialists? Sadly, it is the poor among us that are lured into dependence on the socialist state. What role does the church have to help these folks get off of the government dole, whether it be food stamps or Medicaid/Medicare? James Lansberry from Samaritan Ministries takes a shot at these questions on this edition of Generations. For those folks who still have an interest in freedom, now is the time to lay out meaningful solutions to the inexorable rise in socialism.
