Government-Instituted Abstinence Programs - Virtue Cram Down or Freedom?

June 29, 2011
How is virtue achieved? How do you get people to be moral? These are important questions as we reassess again the purpose of government. Kevin Miller, Author of the book, “Virtue Locally, Freedom Nationally or Socialism,” questions the value of government-instituted abstinence programs. What would happen to Planned Parenthood if government stopped its virtue cram down?

With the average kid in America taking in 12-13 hours of electronic media per day, we are calling Christian parents to discernment in this area. How much media is too much media? And where does media interrupt family relationships? Does media desensitize us to the things that are most important in life? After watching 67 murders in an “Action Film,” are we more sensitive to the horrific character of murder or less sensitive? Phillip Telfer from Media Talk 101 is in studio with us, as we discuss the power of media and it’s potential to do much harm.

In a recent NY Times article, a young Indonesian immigrant explains how difficult it was to leave his Christian faith, in order to fornicate and abort his children. It was about as hard as it was for his Muslim friend to eat a ham sandwich. It took a couple of months in a secular college. The Slavic Christians face the same problem. America has turned into the great Faith-Ruining Machine for anybody who wants to immigrate here. The youth turn towards an attractive materialism, aggressive evolutionism, fornication, and dishonor towards parents. So what's the solution?

Why do both truth and relationships break down simultaneously in the post modern world? Superficiality dominates. Should churches tolerate texting in the church service? And what about the iPhone confessional app? Does Facebook help or hurt? Many churches find that Facebook disables meaningful relationships, and generates more conflict than it resolves. Cain killed his brother and built a city of anonymity, and then he came up with Facebook.

There are conversations, and then there are BIG conversations. These are conversations about God, man, origins, and ultimate consequences. What constitutes evidence? How do you interpret evidence? How do you weigh evidence? These are not simple questions. They drill down into the very basic questions of life. Dr. Jason Lisle gives a clear and straight-forward explanation concerning how creationists and evolutionists look at the evidence. Everybody has their worldviews and presuppositions. It's just that some are better than others, and give a more coherent framework in which to "do" science, ethics, and logic. Some of the worst examples of logical fallacies and sloppy argumentation are used by evolutionists. Dr. Lisle explains why in this interview.

At one time, Christians provided hospitals through churches and charitable organizations, but that has changed with the present socialist and fascist approaches. However, these governmental solutions are fraught with pro-abortion policies, and systems that continue to corrupt the poor with each passing generation. The only possible resolution to this problem is found in biblical charitable solutions. James Lansberry from Samaritan Ministries shares the vision for the "Morning Center", a full service, maternity-care hospital for the poor. This is the next logical step for bringing a pro-life vision to bear in a Planned Parenthood - Roe v. Wade age. What Planned Parenthood has done over 75 years for the cause of a self-centered, materialistic, death-based culture, and what the state has done in ruining the inner-city family is impressive. But could a few Christians with a biblical vision make a real difference by creating one Christ-honoring, pro-life hospital for the poor pregnant mother who wants to keep her baby?

The present form of education doesn't quite find its roots in the Bible. Whatever we're doing in public schools and Christian schools often misses the mark. In this talk given to the Rocky Mountain Super Conference on the Family, Kevin Swanson makes the point that education is important, REALLY important to the future of a nation and the future of each of our children. But what is the best education for our children? Every loving parent wants to give his child the very best, and they know what thing for sure. They're not qualified to do it. So is it time to call in the professionals?

The U.S. Department of Education sets up conferences to enable the networking of homosexuals with young teens. As we recall, the pagan Greeks did the same kind of thing. But it didn’t work out so well. Some parents in America are doing what they can to add to the confusion in the gender blender by raising their boys as girls. Even Christian families are losing their high school-aged children to homosexuality and lesbianism in these schools. But how do we disciple our children who are given to sin, whether it be lesbianism, dishonor of parents, or lying? The issues are essentially the same. Kevin Swanson gets back to the basics on this edition of Generations. If God’s law provides the standard, now our children know the stuff they need to repent of. . .

There is no greater joy than to see our children walk in the truth. But what about generational squishiness? Or generational apostasy? This is more the rule today in Christian churches than the exception. There is hardly any greater pain than to see our children walk out of the truth. How do we prevent teenage rebellion, or at least minimize it? This question is particularly salient today with systemic failure everywhere. Fatherhood fails. Submission fails. Teens rebel. Pastors fail. Churches fail. About the best some churches can do is make sure the youth group stays edgier and more rebellious than the pastor's kids! Dr. Jeffrey Klick, an ex-mega church pastor explains his journey towards re-constructing a biblically-based social order. His new book "Generational Impact" addresses some of the foundational issues to consider as you seek to make a positive generational impact for the kingdom, in your family.

Kevin Swanson interviews Anita Mellott, author of the new book “School is Where the Home Is.” Everybody struggles with comparisons, perfectionism, and stress while raising children, but why do homeschooling moms face these things with astonishing regularity? Anita Mellott has encouraging words to say to mothers who are in the thick of it!

Why the Japanese Family is in Big Trouble Birth implosions. Abortion. Pornography. The hearts of father separated from families. Japan bought the materialist vision, hook, line and sinker after the war. They rejected the Christian worldview, and took the worst of the western worldviews. Now, they are paying for it. But what can be done with the Japanese social collapse? Where do we go from here? That's where Ray Suzuki comes in. Raised in Japan by a father with a vision, he forms a prototype for what could happen with millions of others in the next generation, and the next. Here is a discussion on missions and kingdom vision that could impact MANY cultures and nations around the world! (This program also includes info on dried squid and miso.)
