Where You're Planted, Part 1a

August 17, 2012
What’s on your wish list for the future? A nicer house? A newer car? Or a bigger TV? It’s all well and good to enjoy the creature-comforts life affords, but when we spend too much time dwelling on what we don’t have we can easily get trapped in the nagging feelings of disappointment. Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez shares a biblical strategy, "When the Grass Looks Greener." Perhaps you’ve been peeking over the proverbial fence thinkin’ life could be much better.

When we’re at the market or simply walking down the street, we pass a lot of people who look just like you and me. From the outside, you’d never be able to single out a follower of Jesus Christ. Today on Focal Point, we’ll talk about the key difference in the physical makeup of those who know God. We’re picking up where we left off yesterday in a study of 1 Corinthians 6.

Brown haired, blonde, tall, short, black, white, brown…when it comes to our physical appearance, we all look a little bit different. But as followers of Jesus, we all have one thing in common...our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit! Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez describes some of the practical outcomes of having God’s Spirit living in us. It’s the final portion of a three-part series called, "Sexual Sins and Sanctified Bodies."

Reading your Bible, going to church, spending time in prayer…these are activities we consider “spiritual.” Today on Focal Point, we’ll discover the intricate relationship between the spiritual and the physical. Mike Fabarez is picking up where he left off yesterday in a sensitive study titled, "Sexual Sins and Sanctified Bodies." Most of us are aware of the Bible’s teaching about maintaining purity, but today we’ll uncover one of the reasons sexual immorality is treated so seriously by God.

Try as we may, it’s difficult to avoid the blatant sexual images we see on billboards, magazines and movies. In a world that celebrates personal desire, it’s important we go back to God’s Word for instruction on God's original purpose for physical intimacy. Today, Mike Fabarez approaches this sensitive topic with a study in 1 Corinthians. Chances are, many of us need to un-learn some of the ways we think about sex.

These days, people go to all extremes in the way they treat their bodies. From expensive surgeries and dangerous diets to harmful addictions and abuse. The prevailing feeling is, “It’s my body…I can do what I want!” Mike Fabarez will point out today on Focal Point…the Designer of our body has specific instructions for how we’re called to use it. We’re picking up where we left off in a series about "Sexual Sins and Sanctified Bodies."

Every new appliance comes with a tag that reads, “Manufacturer’s Warnings”. On it you’ll find guidelines for properly using and operating the machinery, without causing damage or hurting yourself! Today on Focal Point Mike Fabarez talks about God’s warnings for His creation and outlines biblical principles for using our bodies according to His plan. It’s the very first portion of a timely study in 1 Corinthians about "Sexual Sins and Sanctified Bodies."

The steely captains who navigate their ships through frigid Northern seas understand the misleading appearance of icebergs. What looks like a small ice cap on the surface is hiding a larger and more dangerous object below! Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez applies that lesson to the church, and helps us recognize the small indicators of looming issues in our hearts. When we see anger, bitterness, or arguments it’s likely…the problem is bigger than you think.

When your car starts making an unusual sound, how do you respond? You could try to ignore it, since the car seems to be running just fine. Or you might choose to take your car to the mechanic. That subtle noise could be an indication of a major engine problem! Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez points out that minor symptoms in the church are often signs of something much more problematic.

In most bookstores you’ll find an entire section devoted to what are called, “self-help” books. These volumes promise to fix any problem big or small…from reducing stress to making friends. While these books may hold practical tips, they always fall short of God’s final Word on right living. Today on Focal Point, pastor and teacher Mike Fabarez reminds us that we already have the authoritative guide to handling all of life’s situations.

Serious athletes exercise rigorously, eat healthy, and train diligently with a clear goal in mind. They know that the sacrifices they make right now will pay dividends when it really counts. Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez draws on this analogy and helps us train spiritually for the life to come. Compared to the joy of what’s ahead, the sorrow and struggles we experience in this life are well worth the cost!
