When Life Really Hurts, Part 2

May 13, 2014
Laughter can be good medicine to a weary heart and troubled mind.  But as healing as laughter can be, it cannot cure every hurt or pain in life.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez turns to the gospel of Luke, and a timely sermon from Jesus about our emotions.  It’s in these verses that Jesus tells us, “Blessed are those who weep.”  Joy in sorrow?  What did Jesus mean by that?

We’re currently in a series called Christianity in Real Life.  It’s a study on the practical things Jesus taught us about everyday life.  We’ve learned how to view our finances, whether we have a lot or a little.  We’ve heard when to pursue our desires and when to hold back.  On this edition of Focal Point, Pastor Mike examines what Jesus said about the appropriate times for laughter and for grief.

A common mantra we hear is “Do whatever makes you happy!”  We’re told that if you want something … take it!  You have a need?  Why not fulfill it?  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez explores why Jesus said leaving some desires unsatisfied may actually bring us the most fulfillment.  It’s relevant truth contained in a rather counter-cultural sermon from Christ.  Jesus told us … Blessed are the hungry.

Even in His day, Jesus was rather counter-cultural.  He consistently flipped commonly held values all topsy-turvy.  Fast-forward two thousand years, and His teaching still causes some to scratch their heads.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez turns to Luke chapter 6, and a relevant sermon from Jesus.  In His message, Jesus offered a series of blessings and warnings that almost seem backward!

We all have needs.  Some of them are essential, like food or shelter.  Others, like a BMW or all the latest fashions, are less so.  Our days are often filled with trying to fulfill them all.  But Jesus said a very curious thing … Blessed are those who don’t always get what they want.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez explores why an unfulfilled desire could be an unrealized blessing.

If we dedicate our lives to growing our bank accounts, there’s a chance we’ll end up wealthy here on earth.  But God’s Word says that if we choose to focus on what really matters, there’s even greater, spiritual riches in store!  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez is in a series in Luke called Christianity in Real Life.

They say, “Money can’t buy happiness.”  But having a big bank account sure helps us buy things that make us happy, right?  Yet, Jesus told us, “Blessed are the poor.”  Is it possible to be happy when funds run thin?  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez explains that in God’s economy … there are times when having a little actually means we have a lot!

Ever wonder why some people can become rich through dishonesty, while some followers of Jesus have trouble making ends meet?  Shouldn’t following biblical principles in our finances mean we have more money than those who don’t?  On this edition of Focal Point, Pastor Mike looks at what Jesus has to say about this in this message called, When the Checkbook is Empty.

Bring home a new appliance, and the first question you’ll ask is, “how does this work?”  You could try to figure it out on your own.  But for the appliance to function as it’s supposed to, it’s best to consult the instructions … provided by the manufacturer!  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez points us to the ultimate Authority on running our day-to-day lives.  That’s because Jesus created us and knows how we work!

This life has its share of problems.  For the answers, we could copy off other people.  Or we could make up the own answers as we go along.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez says that if we’re looking for wisdom on marriage, money, work, or other everyday issues, there’s only one Person to turn to.  As the Author of life, Jesus has all the answers we need!
